Kamen Rider Zi-O Episode 48 Recap

Episode Thoughts

So first of all, I am so sad I wasn’t able to avoid seeing the Tsukuyomi spoilers last Saturday evening. I usually stay away from any possible spoilers around Saturday evening (Sunday morning, Japan time). But I was just excited to see #仮面ライダージオウ trending worldwide again. And obviously, the first thing to pop up when I accidentally click on the hashtag is Tsukuyomi’s beautiful suit. Grrr!!!

Anyway, this was a very exciting episode. Things obviously ramped up 100x this week and definitely built upon Episode 47’s clarity.

A lot of what happened in this episode again drew upon things we’ve seen all season. And in a way that allows you to believe “Yeah, they planned this out all along.” Lol Sometimes you just try to make yourself believe that even when it’s obviously not true. But at the very least, Zi-O has been able to connect a lot of the dots from the season and fit a lot of the puzzle pieces together to make this finale a clear picture.

Things like never-before-seen Riders popping out from the future. Or the planting of blank Watches in the past (or future) so they could get pulled out when needed in the present. It all worked together to bring us that truly awesome moment of Tsukuyomi’s first henshin.

We were obviously jokingly teased about a Kamen Rider Tsukuyomi in the Supplementary Plan X.5 episodes. But it was great to see it become a reality here and apparently integral to the endgame.

Having Tsukuyomi become a Rider certainly fits with Schwartz’s master plan being the focus of this final arc. And speaking of, when in other seasons, the Big Bad’s endgame seems to have been pulled out of nowhere, we were reminded in this episode that we did see Schwartz (as the mysterious trenchcoat man) and young Sougo early in the season in the midst of Tokyo in ruins. So again, these seeds were planted throughout the year and we are now enjoying the fruits.

Obviously though, Oma Zi-O doesn’t want to defeat Sougo. That would mean Oma Zi-O would cease to exist, right? Or at least cease to exist in this specific timeline. Lol We’ll see what becomes of Oma Zi-O.

But an interesting theme is emerging, or at least being brought back to the surface after being buried a little for a while. The idea of being alone and not having friends or comrades. We know Sougo grew up with not many friends. ShiroWoz was envious of KuroWoz having made friends. Sougo, Geiz and Tsukuyomi reaffired their friendship many times and working together is what makes them strong.

So it would seem Oma Zi-O became who he is because of his loneliness. Whether that is of his own making or the circumstances beyond his control, I don’t think we’ll ever know. But that is an interesting thing to consider.

Schwartz too didn’t have friends or comrades. And that was of his own choosing. He just used Ora and Heure, and Sougo of course. And he essentially threw his sister away so he could rule on his own.

Oma Zi-O appears to be on his own in 2068. And since we are to believe that really is Sougo, the difference between the original timeline and now is that Sougo has people around him that would stop him from ever going to the dark side.

Or it’s actually none of this and something completely different. We’ll find out next week. lol

Interpreting that in a serious way, it speaks to kids of all ages out there watching to say that you are never alone. And you can always reach out to someone.

But certainly, Sougo was living a perfectly normal life when we first meet him. And not having lots of friends or fellow Rider teammates doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

So I don’t even know where I’m going with this. Lol Let’s leave the serious discussions about mental health and loneliness to Ryusoulger.

Anyway, I assume Uncle Junichiro is gonna fix the ultimate Watch Sougo needs in the finale. That’s what was in the box, perhaps.

I had hoped Uncle Junichiro knew about Sougo being a Kamen Rider the entire time. But it has been a while since we’ve had a real “Rider keeps his identity a secret” aspect to a season. Not like other seasons where their family and friends know from the start or know, but pretend not to.

So the scene with Sougo and Uncle Junichiro was really nice. And I think the series did a good job maintaining their relationship through the season and keeping it an important part of Sougo’s character.

Elsewhere, it was great to see Tsukasa and Daiki fighting side by side like that. But I still want to see Masahiro and Kimito share an unhenshined scene together!

And again, not knowing what’s happened in the movie, Chase’s death was sad, but it definitely paralleled his first “death.” I have to assume Gou did not find a way to revive Chase if Geiz mentions that he has a friend still working to save him. Hmm…

Overall, a pretty exciting penultimate episode. I admit I did start tearing up at various points during this episode. That bodes well for the finale for me.

  1. Okay, so this episode kinda answered where Tsukuyomi and Geiz’s decision to travel back in time xame from.

Still find that twist of Sougo being the one that provided Tsukuyomi with the blank ridewatch (and Oma Zi-O apparently being who gave it power) a bit headache inducing. So apparently, the Tsukuyomi ridewatch is a product of Present Sougo altering this timeline by giving Tsukuyomi the watch in the future before she traveled into the past.

That still leaves a big question: Where did the Geiz ridewatch come then? It’s the only ridewatch that has no explanation of its origin.

But then again, who cares? I’m just happy that they gave us Kamen Rider Tsukuyomi.

  2. Well, looks like Uncle Junichiro knew already that Sougo is Kamen Rider 🙂
Scene with Chase was very touching🙂I should watch “Drive” soon
I was shocked by Oma Zi-O’s confession. Although I premonited something similar😉
And Tsukuyomi really became Kamen Rider!😁😁😁
Now we can wait for the grand finale😊
