The Amazing Race 31 Season Wrap-up

The Amazing Race 30 Episode 11

Another Amazing Race US season has come and gone. And it gets more and more miraculous that this old franchise continues to survive. But at the very least, we know TARUS still has one more season ready to go.

And Season 32 could very well air more than 16 months after they wrapped filming last year! Craziness!

But anyway, this is a Season 31 Wrap-up of course. Let’s talk about this Reality Showdown! Right off the bat, I will say this was a very standard HD Era season. Definitely far from the HD era gold standard Season 25. And even the next best. Season 27. If this weren’t the much-hyped showdown between Survivor, Big Brother and Amazing Race alums, this would very much be a forgettable season.

And even then, without Corinne & Eliza, Nicole & Victor and Chris & Bret’s Vanessa/Caroline & Jen/Team Cancer-level obsession with the Reillys, the cast would also lack any excitement or drama. I honestly would’ve preferred the bootlist had been reversed completely. Insanity!

Anyway, more on the cast later. But for the Race itself, it again felt uninspired. The only refreshing tasks this season were the canals in the Netherlands, the Rolex Road Block in Uganda (which probably wouldn’t have been all that memorable without Janelle’s mistake), the memorization puzzle in Croatia and the Churchill Road Block in England.

The most interesting event of the season had to be TARUS’ implementation of the U-Turn Vote. As we’ve seen with the Head-to-Head, TARUS does not know how to incorporate twists from its international children. Either you match the way the original series used such twists, or make it better. TARUS has done neither with the Head-to-Head and now the U-Turn Vote. It is really insane how international TARs can be more interesting and creative than the mothership.

As for the Head-to-Head, it has become so irrelevant and horrible, they actually edited it out of the episode. That’s when you know it’s pointless. Either get rid of it completely or watch some HaMerotz LaMillion to know how it is supposed to work.

Overall, The Amazing Race 31 wasn’t a complete disaster. But it certainly doesn’t inspire talk of a resurrection for TARUS. I think TARUS’ future definitely hinges on both TAR32’s outcome and where CBS will be a year from now. (And who knows what will become of CBS a year from now.)

My Subjective Team Rankings

The Amazing Race 31 Rachel & Elissa The Amazing Race 31 Janelle & Britney The Amazing Race 31 Colin & Christie The Amazing Race 31 Rupert & Laura The Amazing Race 31 Corinne & Eliza GAP The Amazing Race 31 Becca & Floyd The Amazing Race 31 Art & JJ The Amazing Race 31 Chris & Bret The Amazing Race 31 Leo & Jamal The Amazing Race 31 Nicole & Victor The Amazing Race 31 Tyler & Korey

I will forever be a fan of Rachel Reilly. I was a fan of her on Big Brother and I was a fan of her and Brendon on TAR. I honestly consider Rachel (and Brendon) to be more TAR All-Stars than BB All-Stars, tbh. And Rachel certainly proved that by breaking records this season. So it was so much fun to watch Rachel & Elissa racing together AND competing together for the first time. I certainly wish they had maintained their solid Racing from the start of the Race. But they were great for the time they were on.

For any Big Brother fan, it was definitely a treat to watch three of the series’ fiercest females and strongest competitors working together for the first time. Rachel, Britney and Janelle are true Big Brother legends. And of course we’ve seen Rachel and Britney compete together as well as Janelle and Britney. But Rachel and Janelle, two BB comp beasts, working together in Vietnam during that karaoke Road Block was THE moment of the season, I must say. The #MomSquad making it all the way to the end together would’ve been the best outcome this season. But the show didn’t seem to be interested in featuring Britney & Janelle in any significant way until their last Leg in Uganda. And that’s certainly a shame knowing how both are witty and funny. It was also sad to have seen them struggle somewhat during the Race. But I certainly would love to watch them Race again.

I’m conflicted with Colin& Christie. I was absolutely not a fan of them after TAR5, but after the years went by, you can’t help but appreciate the drama and hilarity they brought to the show. But they’ve obviously changed and that’s something to applaud in real life. But they’re also here for entertainment and they were a little boring. But then again, their lives aren’t for us to control for our enjoyment. lol I was also torn on seeing them suddenly pop up on this season. Like, it’s awesome Bertram and Elise actually remember pre-HD seasons exist. But also I would’ve preferred Colin & Christie return on a true All-Stars season. And maybe even against Charla & Mirna again. Anyway, they still had a well-deserved win. Not only because the other teams left were horrible. But because they were a great, consistent team. And again, reppin the OGs of TAR. (When TAR was actually amazing, you know what I mean?)

I definitely would’ve preferred Rupert & Laura had stayed longer than most of the final 6 (excluding Colin & Christie). I definitely think they would’ve done better if they went on TAR a few years earlier. But they were still a perfect Survivor casting choice.

Corinne & Eliza definitely played up their “villain” characters during the show. And I actually had no problem with their Pit Stop meltdown or their being catty about other teams, knowing how they were like on Survivor. I wasn’t a fan of their critical comments of the locals and countries they visited. But they were still a hilarious team.

What does it say about the other teams if Becca & Floyd, whom I absolutely did not like after TAR29, is this high on my list?! While they were still their annoying and contrived selves this season, we seemed to get to see the “real” Becca and Floyd more. And I must say “bitchy,” upset Becca is much more tolerable than “fun” Becca.

And what about Art & JJ, one of the most unlikeable teams ever, but not at the bottom of my list? They were definitely not at their TAR20-level Racing and just had a disastrous first
Leg. I thought they actually deserved to be eliminated first after that. But I would gladly exchange them for most of that final 6.

Chris & Bret were definitely a darkhorse team. That is, until they made the most horrible decision ever [/overreaction] when they voted to U-Turn the O’Reillys because they didn’t talk to them. Um… okay. I take back all the positive things I had to say about them before that. I guess they are the best example of the difference between TAR and Survivor/BB. You control your own fate on TAR whereas you are more prone to play emotionally and haphazardly on the other two shows.

This was definitely the worst version of Leo & Jamal we’ve ever seen on TAR. It was unbelievable. Just horrible. The worst camwhoring, the most hypocritical comments. Just completely unwatchable. And they couldn’t even back any of their camwhoring with actual good Racing. They fell forward most of the Race which is a shock, but honestly, if they didn’t spend all that time playing up to the camera, they might have not been such bad Racers in addition to unlikeable characters.

Everything I’ve ever heard and read about Nicole from Big Brother played out in full force on TAR31. I never did understand how Nicole came to be known as “Ratcole” to the BB fandom, but after TAR31, I certainly understand now. Nicole & Victor were horrible, catty people who were overly paranoid and even more sanctimonious. I certainly trust Rachel and Janelle’s judgement when they once criticized her Big Brother gameplay.

And finally, Tyler & Korey. I just hope we never see them on The Amazing Race ever again. If they want to camwhore so much, they can stick to YouTube and their other CBS work. As long as it’s not on TAR.
