Leg 18.04 – “I promise my juice is delicious!”

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

After spending the night in Machu Picchu(!), teams begin the 4th Leg of the Race by opening the clue and being shocked that they will be facing their first Duel Duel!

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

For this Duel Duel, teams must choose one of the llamas who make Machu Picchu their home. Teams will then face off as they guide their llamas through a maze of maize. The team who crosses the finish line first will get the next clue. The losing team must face off against the next team, but they must also choose a new llama so as not to exhaust their new friends. The last team must guide a group of 10 llamas to an open field for grazing before they can receive their next clue.

Teams must now make their way back to Cusco and find their next clue by the cathedral in the San Blas neighborhood. And here, teams will read about the Detour: Traditional Treasures or Refreshing Refreshments.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

In Traditional Treasures, teams must make their way to Museo Inka. They will receive a painting of traditional Inca life and then search the narrow alleyways for five items depicted in the scene. Once they’ve returned to the museum with the five artifacts, they will receive their next clue.

In Refreshing Refreshments, teams must make their way to Mercado Central de San Pedro. They will first shop the fruit stands for items on a provided shopping list. Then, they will head to one of the flagged juice stalls to create 10 different drinks according to provided recipes. Once they get 10 different locals to buy their drinks, they will get the next clue. The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Here, teams must choose an alpaca and load it into a taxi and accompany it to the Awana Kancha Alpaca Farm in order to receive their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Teams can now head to Saqsaywaman, a citadel on the northern outskirts of Cusco.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Here, teams will find the Double Yield board! (If activated.)

After checking in at the Yield, teams will encounter the Road Block: Who’s a cut above the rest?

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

For this Road Block, teams must use a set of provided stone replicas to build a free standing wall in the style of the mysterious ashlar polygonal masonry seen throughout Cusco. Teams must cut the different shaped stones to perfectly fit and form a wall that can stand on its own. If teams make a mistake or cut too much off the already provided stones, they must take a large uncut stone and shape it themselves.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any team needs to shape two or more stones, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Teams must now search the Walls of Coricancha for their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

And that clue tells teams to find the Pit Stop inside the Church of Santa Domingo.

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

I think this is a great Leg in Cusco! Really some wonderful tasks that highlight Cusco very well.

First up, we maximize our time at Machu Picchu with the Duel Duel. It’s a very simple task and could provide some funny moments with our llama friends. We could also find a different task that could be staged in the area instead as well.

The Detour is a good choice and I think pretty balanced. Both gets teams interacting with the locals and has them exploring the great and dynamic Cusco daily life.

The next task might be familiar if you saw the viral video last year:

It was a very random moment, but very interesting and kind of endearing too. So it will be fun to have the teams do the same thing here. Lol

The highlight of this Leg though has to be the Road Block. One of the most known things of Cusco are the fascinating stone walls around the city. It should be very interesting to have teams assembling their own walls using the same system which definitely is intricate and must be carefully done. We’ll have to make sure to make the task challenging and not just simply stacking foam squares on top of each other.

Overall, a really great and full Leg in Cusco!
