Leg 18.03 – “I think I’m offending them with my dance.”

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

This exciting 18th season of The Amazing Race Philippines: DryedMangoez Edition continues as teams open their first clue of the third Leg telling them they’ll be flying to Cusco, Peru!

Teams will end up on one of two flights either via Mexico City & Lima or Dallas/Ft. Worth & Lima, arriving in Cusco at 8:05am and 8:50am, respectively.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Once in Cusco, teams must search Plaza de Armas for their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

That clue tells teams to make their way to the Maras Salt Mines.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

These ancient salt mines are all taken care of by local families in the community, with each family assigned to a salt pond. Teams must search for an unclaimed salt pond and harvest all the salt they can from it. They must then carry the salt to the loading area. When approved by the local family, teams will be given the next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Teams must continue on into the Urubamba Valley and find their next clue in the town.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

The Festival of El Senor de Torrechayoc celebrates Urubamba’s patron. Teams will choose one of 30 folkloric dances and learn a full routine before dressing up in traditional costumes to perform it for the crowd. When approved, they will receive the next clue.

And that clue reveals the Road Block! Who’s got a match-ful eye?

For this Road Block, teams must now observe the different dance performances and remember the details of at least eight dances. They will then need to match the costumes and names of those eight folk dances in a quiz to receive their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Teams must now make their way to the town of Chinchero.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

And here, teams will find a Double U-Turn! After checking in at the U-Turn, teams will open the next clue revealing the Detour: Dye It or Weave It.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

In Dye It, teams will learn how to wash and dye alpaca wool. Once they have successfully dyed six different colored wool and hung them to dry, they must collect already dried wool and roll them onto looms to receive their next clue.

In Weave It, each team member must learn how to and successfully weave the pattern of a small pillow using alpaca wool. Once approved, they will receive their next clue.

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If an equal number of teams complete the Detours (five on each side), the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

Teams open the next clue which only tells them “Find Munaysonqo in Aguas Calientes.”

The Amazing Race Philippines DryedMangoez Edition

Teams must figure out that Munaysonqo is this monument in the town of Aguas Calientes where they will find their next clue.

From here, teams must hop on a bus that will take them to Machu Picchu!

“Director’s” Commentary

This should be a wonderful Leg with the obviously stunning Mat in Machu Picchu. 8K UHD drone shots will be absolutely used to the fullest!

First off, we of course have to get teams to Cusco before setting off into the valley. I wanted this Leg to really focus on the valleys outside of Cusco. Both for logistical reasons to get teams closer to Machu Picchu of course as well as to highlight a wonderful way of life here as well. A great contrast to the first two Legs.

We will have teams with a salt harvesting task. Certainly not new for TARPHDME, but it’s in a stunning location. (More 8K UHD drone shots!) And it gets teams to interact with the local families.

Next up, we have teams enjoy some of the festivities in Urubamba town. The dancing task is straightforward and a nice cultural task. But the Road Block should be the tricky one with having to try and memorize the different performances. It should be very tense considering there could be as many as 10 teams doing the tasks while also in a huge crowd of people. Fun!

Next we have the Detour that focuses solely on the alpaca wool that is widely known from this area. Both simple Detours that are just tedious that could really stress teams. Also a perfect spot for a U-Turn.

Finally, we get teams to Aguas Calientes as their jumping off point for the final journey to the Mat on this Leg in Machu Picchu.

I certainly wish we could do more at Machu Picchu since it’s really a once in a lifetime visit, yes? Just really stunning.

Overall, a wonderful and full Leg in Peru!
