Recap: Kamen Rider Zi-O, Episode 27 – The Beginning of Everything 2009

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Both Geiz and Sougo’s finishers cancel each other out and both get sent flying back. But before they can get up and try again, KuroWoz pops in and says the only person who would be happy to see this score settled here is ShiroWoz.

KuroWoz whisks Geiz to a rooftop, leaving Sougo behind.

As blood drips from Geiz’s nose, KuroWoz warns him that Geiz Revive is an immense power that will take a huge toll on his body. The power is brought about by compressing and stretching time and that in turns causes irreparable damage to Geiz’s body.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

KuroWoz asks if Geiz really wants to defeat Zi-O that bad. Geiz says that was his only goal when he came to this time. But KuroWoz believes Geiz has become close friends with Sougo, so he wonders why he suddenly wants to defeat him again.

Geiz explains that his indecisiveness may have driven Tsukuyomi to drastic measures like killing Sougo in 2009 before she herself dies in the bus explosion. His main goal is to defeat Zi-O so there is no way he would be friends with him.

Geiz henshins to Revive. KuroWoz reminds Geiz that he has never lost to him yet. But Geiz proceeds to change that now. He is able to counter anything KuroWoz throws at him.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Geiz assures KuroWoz that he can overcome anything Zio-O II can dream up as well. Geiz leaves. KuroWoz decides it’s time to make a move.

ShiroWoz pops in to greet his savior. But Geiz says he will not be his savior, but merely defeat Zi-O. Geiz walks away and ShiroWoz says Geiz is indeed a savior, “for us, that is.”

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Sougo sees a sign at the shop door advertising an open room for rent. Uncle Junichiro says it’s a good idea to get some new boarders since Geiz and Tsukuyomi aren’t coming back. He admits that it feels kind of lonely with just the two of them there.

Uncle Junichiro asks Sougo if he agrees, but Sougo says it’s alright since he’s always been alone anyway.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

KuroWoz approaches Ora and Heure to ask for their help, but Ora refuses and tells him to beat it.

On the other side of town, Geiz runs into Hiryu who insists he will be the one that defeats Sougo. They both henshin and Hiryu is immediately overwhelmed by Geiz Revive’s power.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Hiryu is quickly forced to dehenshin as he lays on the ground. Geiz dehenshins, but his knees buckle and he sees his ear is bleeding now.

Geiz gets up and tells Hiryu that he will be the one that defeats Zi-O. He walks away.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Hiryu lets out a frustrated scream. But Heure suddenly pops up. He says Hiryu is no match for Zi-O II or Geiz Revive. Hiryu begs Heure to tell him how he can defeat them.

Heure tells Hiryu to take the power of a certain other Rider from the future. He hands Hiryu a blank Watch.

Hiryu then finds two men he turns into Another Ghost and Another Gaim.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Heure meets with KuroWoz in a semi-secret fashion. Turns out Heure approached KuroWoz after Ora told him to get lost. Heure expressed how he wants to know everything that happened, is happening and will happen. KuroWoz then told him about his plan and says this is the only thing they can do, win or lose.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Later, Sougo gets a text from Geiz with a location for them to settle everything once and for all. He tells Uncle Junichiro he’s heading out, but Uncle Junichiro has something he wants to say.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Uncle Junichiro says there’s one thing he regrets not doing since Sougo came to live with him. That is, to scold him, even once. When he first took Sougo in, Uncle Junichiro wasn’t sure how to really interact with him or how much he should interfere in his life especially after the death of Sougo’s parents. Uncle Junichiro didn’t have the courage to scold Sougo since then. But with Tsukuyomi and Geiz gone, he says this is his chance to muster up the courage and finally scold Sougo.

Uncle Junichiro knows Sougo is lonely now that Tsukuyomi and Geiz are gone. And he wants Sougo not to just say that everything is okay even when he isn’t. That Sougo should just come right out and say that he is lonely!

“A person who can’t say he is lonely when he actually is will become a king who doesn’t understand the pain of others.”

Sougo smiles and thanks his uncle before he heads out.

Schwartz watches Geiz head to the duel location and remembers April 24, 2009.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Sougo and his parents board a bus with his classmates for a strawberry-picking trip. Tsukuyomi arrives and boards the bus as well. And the bus’ driver… is one Kadoya Tsukasa.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Already on the road, Tsukuyomi knows something is going to happen on this bus, but what?

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Just then, a hat and trenchcoat-wearing Schwartz appears on the road and freezes time, stopping the bus. Schwartz boards the bus and notes that the king who will rule time is among the 2000-born children who are passengers today.

Schwartz lets the bus continue driving down the road. Tsukasa finds he can no longer control it.

Schwartz wants to see how the king candidate can overcome this deadly ordeal.

The bus careens down the road. Sougo’s and another child’s father confront Schwartz, but he just sends them flying back. He freezes time for only the adults on the bus.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Sougo angrily confronts Schwartz. Schwartz grabs Sougo by the collar as Hiryu watches. Tsukuyomi gets up and yells at Schwartz to let Sougo go.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Tsukuyomi calls out Sougo’s name and fires at Schwartz. But Schwartz blocks the shot with his hat and it ricochets back towards Hiryu who falls unconscious.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Tsukuyomi demands to know what Schwartz is doing here in 2009. Schwartz will not allow Tsukuyomi to interfere with his plans. He sends her flying back before he collects all the children from the bus and himself into a ball of light.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

The ball explodes through the back window as the bus continues to careen out of control and into the tunnel where it eventually explodes. But not before it appears Tsukasa saves himself and Tsukuyomi by transporting themselves elsewhere.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Sougo wakes up as he and the other kids, including Hiryu, are sprawled out on a footbridge in the middle of chaos with Dai Mazines attacking Tokyo.

Tsukuyomi finds Sougo and the other boys who are watching the scene and crying out for their parents. She can’t find a path to get to Sougo.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Back in 2019, ShiroWoz henshins when Another Ghost and Another Gaim attack him. They battle. But Hiryu appears with the blank Watch and proceeds to suck out Woz’s power.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

With the power now in the new Watch, ShiroWoz is no longer henshined. Heure hops in to say they have taken Kamen Rider Woz’s power. Heure mocks ShiroWoz.

ShiroWoz writes in his tablet that Kamen Rider Woz’s power will return to Woz.

The Woz power leaves the Watch and flies toward ShiroWoz. But just then, KuroWoz leaps in to grab it for himself.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

ShiroWoz screams in exasperation.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Geiz arrives at the duel location. But meeting him instead is KuroWoz.

KuroWoz says he will not allow Geiz to fight his demon king. But Geiz is confident his Revive power can overcome anything KuroWoz tries to hurl at him.

Kamen Rider Zi-O 27

Geiz henshins to Revive Shippu. But KuroWoz whips on his Driver and henshins to Kamen Rider Woz.

They battle.

Sougo rides along toward Geiz.

Episode Thoughts

Wow! Now that’s what you call an action-packed episode! So many things happening. So many things revealed. Emotional moments all over. And not once did my head hurt trying to comprehend everything. That’s a big win!

I know Zi-O certainly has required suspension of disbelief and even common sense at times. lol But this episode was really exciting with its revelations and twists which really help move everything forward. At the same time, I don’t feel like any of this stuff was pulled out of nowhere, which is often the case with big toku twists.

First, my favorite moment from the episode was definitely Uncle Junichiro’s “scolding” of Sougo. It was a really wonderful and emotional moment between them. The guitar/acoustic version of “Over Quartzer” this time helped set the mood for the scene perfectly again.

But it’s really great character moments like this that help the show and the story be fuller. It was a meaningful moment. For Uncle Junichiro, it illustrated how much he cares for Sougo and also the expected difficulties one would have when having to take over raising someone else’s child. Even if that child is still your family and blood.

For Sougo, it was another illustration of his background and personality. We’ve learned that he might not have had many friends growing up. And he himself has learned and adapted to that situation. Even more, knowing what Geiz and Tsukuyomi and even his uncle may be going through, he doesn’t want to have to burden others with his problems. He’s used to it by now.

There might even be a part here where Uncle Junichiro was so afraid of coming across as meddling in Sougo’s life to the point that Sougo might have felt Uncle Junichiro didn’t really care that much about him. Not that Uncle Junichiro neglected him in any way. We even saw how he struggled several times to give Sougo the college entrance exam papers. He wants Sougo to do well.

But the hands-off approach Uncle Junichiro might have had (because he was afraid of and unsure of how to deal with Sougo’s feelings) added to the possible loneliness Sougo might have felt. And for Sougo to learn early on to be independent and maybe keep his feelings to himself.

Add to that whatever Schwartz might have engrained in Sougo’s mind, the reason Sougo wants to be king is slowly becoming much clearer.

That’s all very fascinating. I might be completely off, but just thinking about it is very exciting.

We of course see now that Sougo’s “dream” he described in Episode 15 actually happened in the past (future?). And the mysterious hat-wearing man with no face was actually Schwartz.

So Schwartz does want Sougo to be the king? Or how does “choosing” Sougo fit into whatever ulterior motive he does have. We already know that he definitely has his own goals in mind. Heure’s already realized that as well, thus agreeing to work with KuroWoz, even if temporarily. He doesn’t like being in the dark.

With Geiz, KuroWoz basically said what we’re all thinking. Geiz has obviously grown to consider Sougo as a friend. So why the change? Well, Geiz also considers Tsukuyomi a friend. And maybe similar to how Sougo feels, he doesn’t want anyone else to take on the burden of something he can take on himself. Even if that means whittling away at his own life to do so.

But it turns out, as expected, Tsukuyomi wasn’t going to kill Sougo back in 2009. Should be interesting to see Geiz’s reaction once he finds out.

And I definitely hope we learn more about Hiryu and his motivation to kill Sougo. I think there really can be some great story there if they can flesh it out and not just use him as a mere plot device.

Overall, a really exciting and full episode. I think this episode really showed what the season can be capable of. Very dramatic, emotional, serious. I’ve very much enjoyed where Zi-O has been heading these last couple of weeks.

  1. Aha, so Schwarz is the one who caused this accident! And Tsukuyomi actually tried to save young Sougo after all! (although I still don’t like her LOL)
I wonder what is Tsukasa’s next move? I know in episodes 29 and 30 we may see Daiki Kaito/Kamen Rider Diend 🙂
Can’t Geiz really see that his new power can be dangerous for him!? Someone should hit his head!
Very good KuroWoz became Kamen Rider. He’s much better than ShiroWoz! 😀
Uncle Junichoro really went through himself. He reminded Sougo what is very important – friends! I really like Sougo because his character reminds me. He didn’t have much friends, he was lonely and certainly sad. I bet soon he’ll find what is important 🙂

  2. This eps . had so many good moments. And just likeyou, I am trying o figure out Schwarz’ Master Plan..
