Leg 15.09 – “I’m recreatin’ it!”

Only a few Legs left! And for this 9th Leg, teams will take a bus and train to the capital of Croatia, Zagreb!

Teams will arrive in Zagreb at Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor station and must search for their clue outside.

Teams will also need to check in at the Double Yield board.

After, teams must make their way to the Sljeme ski resort where they will find the Road Block: Who wants to be a snow queen?

For this Road Block, teams will compete for the annual Snow Queen trophy by completing a slalom course on skis without hitting any poles or falling down in order to receive their next clue.

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If the majority of teams (4) avoid falling at any point during their runs, the final U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg. If no teams fall during their runs, the All U-Turn or All Yield will be activated.

After the Road Block, teams must head to the Marian Shrine in Marija Bistrica. And here, they will find ANOTHER Road Block! Who wants to get intricate?

Licitars are one of Croatia’s intangible cultural assets. Having originated in this area, licitars are a traditional symbol of Zagreb. For this Road Block, teams will get to learn how to create these beautiful, though intricate biscuits and edible souvenirs. Teams will choose two readymade licitar hearts which they must recreate down to the last detail. They will then take a fresh licitar heart and create their own design. They must then get five locals to give it the thumbs up to receive their next clue.

Teams will now make their way back to Zagreb and find Strossmayer Promenade. Here, teams will search easels of paintings for one that has their clue. Teams will exchange the figurine they obtained in the last Leg for the painting which they must keep until further notice.

And for now, teams must complete the Detour: Buy It or Pack It.

In Buy It, teams must head to the famous Dolac Market and search the umbrella-covered stalls for 10 with flags. From these stalls, teams must purchase specific items from a list and then deliver the items to a nearby home address to receive their next clue.

Slavoljub Pankala, a native of Zagreb, is credited with developing the mechanical pencil and the first solid-ink fountain pen. In Pack It, teams will head to Toz Penkala, a school and office supply company established by Penkala himself. Teams will follow the production line of several types of mechanical and graphite pencils. Then, teams must fill 40 boxes with a set of complete colored pencils to receive their next clue.

Teams must now make their way to St. Mark’s Church for their next clue.

That clue directs teams to make their way on foot to Mimara Museum. Teams must quietly search the museum for the real version of their replica painting they obtained at Strossmayer Promenade. Once they have found the painting, teams will collect a sack of puzzle pieces which they will take with them to the Botanical Garden, on foot, to assemble and display.

Finally, teams can make their way to the Croatian National Theatre, the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

I think this is a nice, full Leg in Zagreb. All the Croatian Legs on TAR so far have focused on Dubrovnik, so yay for an all-original Leg! lol

First, we’ll get teams on a bus and train to Zagreb from Dubrovnik. That provides a much more fulfilling travel experience for everyone involved, including viewers. Putting the Yield at the start of the Leg is also just a simple attempt to provoke drama right at the start. It will likely not affect any teams as there would still be a full Leg afterwards.

Looking up Zagreb, I read about the Snow Queen trophy so I thought Why not? More snow for our Filipino teams. Skiing is a straightforward task, but doing it right in the morning and at the start of the Leg should be great fun.

Next up is the Marian Shrine which of course will play very well in the Philippines hehe. But this task focuses on the licitar which is a great cultural part of Zagreb specifically. This will be a detail-oriented task that will definitely need patience. Should be great for tension. And the needing to get locals to approve of their licitars should be great for added frustration.

The paintings at Strossmayer Promenade are just an extra task connected to the extra Route Marker at the end of the Leg. And also it finishes the figurine task from last Leg.

The Detour is also straightforward, but can be very challenging with maybe some tweaks. I think part of this full Leg, it will be great to get teams really into competition mode.

Overall, a very full Leg in Zagreb! I like it.
