Leg 15.04A – “I’m choppin’ it!”

It’s time for a big jump as the teams learn their next destination is Rome, Italy!

Teams will secure tickets on one of three flights: Emirates via Dubai arriving at 12:40pm, Qatar Airways via Doha arriving at 12:55pm or Eithad Airways via Abu Dhabi arriving at 1:05pm.

Once in Rome, teams must make their way to The Colosseum where they must first look for the Forced Double U-Turn Vote Board, if activated.

After voting for two teams to U-Turn, teams must then search the area outside The Colosseum to pick up a 2018 Kia Rio.

Teams must drive themselves to the Port of Civitavecchia where they will take an overnight ferry to Olbia on the island of Sardinia.

Arriving at 6:30am, teams must then drive themselves to the town of Tempio Pausania and this cork oak forest where they will find the Road Block: Who’s feeling corky?

For this Road Block, teams must learn how to harvest cork from this cork oak forest. Once they have correctly harvested and chopped up enough to fill a marked container, they will receive their next clue.

Teams must now drive themselves to Castello de Fosdinovo in the town of Bosa and walk along the ramparts to find their next clue below. That clue reveals the Detour: Dried Up or Laced Up.

In Dried Up, teams must walk the alleyways of the town to find tomato drying locations. Teams must lay out 25 tomatoes at two stations to dry. They must then take a number from each location to find a matching set of already dried tomatoes at two other locations elsewhere in the area to receive their next clue.

In Laced Up, teams must find this small workshop and learn how to make traditional Bosa filet lace. Once both team members have correctly made a small pattern, they will receive their next clue.

After completing the Detour, teams must make their way to Corso Vittorio Emanuele and find the U-Turn Reveal Board which they will also learn is Blind!

Teams must now drive towards the city of Nuoro and search for this sheep farm on the outskirts. Here they will find a Duel Duel!

For this Duel Duel, teams will face off and herd as many sheep as possible into their marked pens in one minute. The team with the most sheep will win the Duel Duel. The last team will need to herd ALL sheep before they can continue with the Race.

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any team fails to get any sheep into their pen within one minute, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated.

Teams must now drive into Nuoro and search for this restaurant. Here, teams will learn how to make Su Filindeu pasta in a process known by only a few people in the whole world.

Once they’ve made a good batch, teams must make their way on foot to Nuoro Cathedral for their next clue.

That clue tells teams to make their way on foot and search for Piazza Satta, the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

What teams don’t know is that there are two Piazza Sattas. The correct one is Piazza Sebastiano Satta, not Piazza Salvatore Satta.

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check in here… will learn this is a SuperLeg and all teams must continue Racing! BUT!!! In a new TARPHDME twist, the last team to arrive at the midpoint of a SuperLeg will now face an Automatic Rewind on the second half of the SuperLeg! Wow!

“Director’s” Commentary

Wow indeed!

So! Originally, this season wasn’t going to have a SuperLeg. But with its late premiere date, I realized a certain future Leg would be perfect airing next week. 😉 So I had to shuffle Legs around and it just so happened these two Legs were perfect for a SuperLeg and one that can air in a special two-hour episode! Hehe.

So this first half of the Leg is focused on the island of Sardinia. Definitely lots of things that could be done here. To connect to Sardinia from Sri Lanka, Rome is the logical connecting point. And being in Rome, why waste the opportunity to visit an iconic location along the way.

Plus, it’s a perfect place to pick up a Kia for the SuperLeg. An overnight car ferry ride is a good way to get teams moving here. And driving across the island should be one of the highlights of this Leg.

Designing this Leg started out with the Su Filindeu pasta in Nuoro. So I tried looking for things to build a Leg around that. First off, I found the cork oak forests of Sardinia. Harvesting cork is definitely a perfect, physical Road Block.

I really like the Detour in Bosa. It looks like a wonderfully stunning little town. And having teams walking around town for the Detour should be great. The tasks are different and fresh as well.

The highlight of the Leg though has to be the Duel Duel. Sheep and trying to herd them can always produce some fun and hilarity. But here, we get the extra element of competition in a Duel Duel. It’s a simple, straightforward task. Get as many sheep into the pen as you can. Should be awesome.

Next up is the Su Filindeu pasta task. Very fascinating that it’s almost like a secret recipe kind of thing. Would also make for a good Road Block. But also, a more interesting task is possible here with more thought too.

Finally, teams will walk some more and hopefully walk to the wrong location for the Pit Stop. lol Inspired by TAR Canada 5’s Panama Leg where the final clue was ambiguous enough for teams to not know which location was the real one.

Overall, this should be a very good Leg. It’s certainly a very full Leg and would be perfectly fine as a Leg on its own.
