Leg 14.09 – “We can get lit. But not literally.”

This Leg in Mallorca, Spain was “filmed” before the terrorist attack in Barcelona on August 17th. We dedicate this Leg to the victims, their families and all the people of Barcelona and Spain.

TARPHDM14

Only a few more Legs before teams return home. And for this 9th Leg, teams will fly to Palma de Mallorca, Spain!

TARPHDM14

All teams will be on the same Lufthansa flight via Frankfurt, arriving in Palma at 12:10pm. They will search the airport carpark for brand new 2018 Kia Sorentos.

TARPHDM14

Teams will drive their Sorento to the Rafa Nadal Sports Centre in Manacor where they will find the Road Block: Who can keep it inbounds?

TARPHDM14

For this Road Block, teams must return 30 tennis balls fired by an automatic server within bounds, 15 each on a clay court and on a hard court. Once teams are able to do so, they will receive the next clue. If the machine runs out of tennis balls, they must start over with the count reset only on that specific surface.

TARPHDM14

After the Road Block, teams must drive themselves to Sa Pobla where they will find the Detour: Spin It or Log It.

TARPHDM14

In Spin It, teams must replace two blades on a 400-year old Mallorcan windmill.

TARPHDM14

In Log It, teams must use a tractor to transport 30 logs across a field to a storage warehouse to prepare for winter.

TARPHDM14

After the Detour, teams must drive to the Can Gordiola Glass Factory and Museum in Algaida.

TARPHDM14

Here, teams will find the Double Yield board.

TARPHDM14

After checking in, teams must then correctly make a hand-blown glass figurine to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM14

Teams must now drive back to Palma and search Parc de la Mar for their next clue.

TARPHDM14

Here, teams will celebrate La Nite de Foc and set up fireworks on a dragon according to a provided diagram. When approved, the fireworks will be lit and teams must run alongside it to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM14

That clue directs teams to make their way on foot to Palma Cathedral.

TARPHDM14

This is the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any team does not walk to the Pit Stop, the final U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

This is also the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race. The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

This could be a very nice Leg! So, this Leg mainly was to feature Correfoc and have teams do some kind of fireworks task. I stumbled upon the festival and thought it would be exciting and fun and very dangerous (hehe) for teams to do a task relating to it.

Then I realized TAR21 actually visited Palma for a Leg so I decided why not recycle it as well. (This might be the most Earth-friendly season of TARPHDME yet! lol)

First, you’re in Mallorca, so why not give a nod to Rafa Nadal. This Road Block is a modified and I think upgraded version of TAR21’s. It uses the two different playing surfaces and also increases the number of balls.

The Detour is also modified to keep both sides in the same area and keep them balanced and related. The windmill task was pretty good. And the tractor/logs task should present its own challenges. I put a Yield on this Leg, but I think it would be a nice spot for a U-Turn instead.

The glass factory is a simple extra task to help fill out the Leg.

But again, the highlight of the Leg should be teams running around in the middle of fireworks. And of course, the timing of this Leg should allow teams to do this final task after sunset.

Overall, this should be a very nice Leg.
