Leg 14.08A – “Smash the fish, not my hand!”

TARPHDM14

It’s time for teams to fly from Amsterdam to Oslo, Norway!

Teams must secure their own tickets on (but really will end up on) one of these direct flights: SAS arriving at 8:55pm, KLM arriving at 10:35pm and Norwegian Air arriving at 11:20pm.

TARPHDM14

Included in their first clue envelope is a picture of a building which is where they can find their next clue in Oslo. Teams will need to figure out it is a picture of the Oslo Opera House.

TARPHDM14

And the clue found there tells teams to make their way to Svolvaer by flying to Bodo to catch a ferry.

TARPHDM14

Teams will find their next clue at the Svolvaer Ferry Terminal and it reveals the Detour: Hang Your Heads or Hammer of the Cods.

TARPHDM14

In Hang Your Heads, teams must string together ten bundles of ten fish heads each. They must then use a wheelbarrow to transport them to a fish drying rack and place them on a marked rod. Once finished, the fisherman will hand them their next clue.

TARPHDM14

In Hammer of the Cods, teams must climb 30 feet high drying racks to collect 20 pairs of dried cod. They must then bring them, by hand, to a manufacturing area where they will pound the cod into fish jerky without bones. Once they have 1.5 kilos of jerky, they will receive the next clue.

TARPHDM14

After the Detour, teams must search outside the factory for the Double U-Turn board.

TARPHDM14

After checking in at the U-Turn, teams must now take a high speed RIB to the Henningsvaer fishing village.

TARPHDM14

They must search the area for their next clue. And that clue reveals the Road Block: Who’s the biggest swinger?

TARPHDM14

For this Road Block, teams must jump off the Henningsvaer Bridge and swing on the end of an 80-foot rope. Whenever ready, teams must unclip themselves and splash into the arctic water to swim to a buoy to grab their next clue. They can then swim to the waiting partners.

TARPHDM14

After the Road Block, teams must choose a brand new 2018 Kia Sportage.

TARPHDM14

And drive themselves to the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg in the municipality of Vestvagoy.

Here, teams will find a Double Road Block: Flick of the Hand or Flick of the Wrist.

TARPHDM14

Teams will be participating in Viking challenges. The team member who chooses Flick of the Hand must use a bow and arrow to hit three different targets.

TARPHDM14

The team member who choose Flick of the Wrist must use an axe to hit three different targets.

TARPHDM14

Once they’ve passed the Viking challenge, teams can make their way on foot to Lilandsvatnet Lake and row themselves to a waiting Viking ship, the Pit Stop.

The first team to check in here will win P100,000 for their chosen charity, courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

And that’s all because this is actually a SuperLeg! ALL teams must keep Racing! Woah~!

“Director’s” Commentary

TAR23 was generally a Meh season, but I did like this Norway Leg. The idea of an atypical “night” Leg in the midnight sun was great. And definitely something different for these Filipino teams and Filipino audiences.

First, the simple Oslo Opera House Route Marker is an extra little task to get teams settled in Norway after being on three different flights.

The gross factor of the Detour with the dried fish and smell and all that is likely minimized with these Filipino teams as well. So with that gone, I tried to make the tasks more difficult and physically challenging instead with the extra numbers.

The Road Block is pretty good and it gets these tropical Filipino teams into the freezing cold arctic water.

Thank you Kia for the sponsorship! The Sportage will come in very handy for the rest of this Leg and the rest of the teams’ time in Norway.

The Double Road Block at the Viking Museum is to just help fill out this Leg. And we definitely gotta have some Viking-related tasks. Both are straightforward, typical TAR tasks. But hopefully challenging enough for what the teams will believe is the end of the Leg.

But of course it isn’t! The SuperLeg is basically a logistics decision to get teams on the necessary flights to their next destination later on. But, TARPHDME does like to have at least one SuperLeg each season to spice things up.

Overall, a good solid Leg in Norway which should provide some stunning 4K UHD drone footage and ample opportunity for competition.
