Leg 14.05 – “I wish I could sew your mouth shut.”

TARPHDM14

Lucknow, India!

To start this 5th Leg of the Race, the nine remaining teams must figure out how to get to Lucknow. Teams must first get themselves back to Hanoi where they will fly on to Bangkok on Vietnam Airlines. Teams will then be on one of two Jet Airways flights to Lucknow: The first via Delhi arrives at 7am while the second via Mumbai arrives at 9am.

TARPHDM14

Once in Lucknow, teams must make their way to the Ambedkar Memorial Park to search for their next clue.

TARPHDM14

Here, teams must do some elephant maths! Teams must figure out how many elephant feet, ears and trunks there are in the park, add all three numbers and then give their answer to local schoolchildren who will give them their next clue. Teams are FORBIDDEN to help each other, otherwise they will incur a 30-minute penalty.

TARPHDM14

Before leaving the park, teams must search for the Double Yield board and check in.

TARPHDM14

Afterwards, teams must make their way to the BBD Badminton Academy for their next clue.

TARPHDM14

Teams will be facing off against local pro opponents and must score 20 points before them to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM14

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg. If any team is able to beat the local pros in their first match, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

TARPHDM14

Teams will now head to the Ada Designer Chikan Studio where they will find the Road Block: Who can make precise pricks?

TARPHDM14

For this Road Block, teams must correctly embroider a traditional chikan design on a sample cloth. Once approved, teams will receive their next clue.

TARPHDM14

Teams must now make their way to Bara Imambara where they will search the complex for the cluebox. And that clue will reveal the Detour: Foods or Goods.

TARPHDM14

For both Detours, teams will head to Aminabad Market.

TARPHDM14

In Foods, teams must search the market and buy ingredients needed to make tuned ke kabab which teams must then cook and sell to locals. Once they’ve sold all their cooked food, they will be given the next clue.

TARPHDM14

In Goods, teams must pick up boxes of items including embroidered dresses, clothes, books and cheap jewelry which they must set up in a marked stall. Teams must sell all their products to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM14

The next clue will only tell teams: “Here lies the son of empire who tried to do his duty.” Teams must figure out that this refers to The Residency and the quote is on an epitaph near the grave of Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence.

TARPHDM14

The final clue will direct teams to the Pit Stop in front of the Constantia Building at La Martiniere School.

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+ with half of that money for the team’s chosen charity.

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s Commentary

Woohoo! A great all-original Lucknow Leg! Very nice. Enjoy this because it might be the last original Leg for a while lolol

Anyway, it’s a very straightforward Leg, but definitely not linear. Each task here allows for teams to move ahead or fall behind based on their own Racing and luck.

The counting elephants at the first task is very typical TAR, but there’s the added tricky questions that may or may not confuse teams at the very first task of the Leg, right in the morning after a long trip from Vietnam.

Badminton has certainly been done on TAR before and similar tasks have been staged using volleyball, for example. But Lucknow is home to the headquarters of the Badminton Association of India, so why not include that here for a task. It would also make a good Road Block as well. But doubles could make for faster play and thus harder for teams who may not be experienced.

Lucknow is also known for its chikan embroidery, so of course we gotta have a task. You could do many different tasks with it, but I chose to do the embroidery itself which can be very tedious. And that’s great to stress out teams!

Bara Imambara is a 4K UHD-drone ready location that we just have to include here. It could be a Pit Stop location as well, but having teams run around the place looking for the cluebox should maximize the stunning location.

The Detour are simple market tasks with an emphasis on interacting with locals by getting them to buy stuff. I think it’s a pretty balanced Detour.

The Residency riddle should be a nice thinking clue for the final task of the Leg. And it’s another location that would be great in 4K UHD =)

Finally, the La Martiniere School is an atypical Pit Stop location away from large public places. And of course, one final 4K UHD drone-worthy location in Lucknow.

Overall, a pretty great and full Leg in Lucknow!
