Leg 14.02 – “Will you catch me if I fall?”

TARPHDM14

The Race continues for the 11 remaining celeb teams as they must now fly to Seoul, South Korea!

Teams will end up on one of two flights to Seoul Incheon. The first flight on Korean Air direct from Nadi arrives at 5:35pm. The second flight via Hong Kong on Air Pacific and Cathay Pacific arrives at 9:10pm!!! Three and a half hours later!!!

TARPHDM14

Upon arrival at Incheon, teams must hop on any train that will get them to Myeongdong.

TARPHDM14

Teams must then search the bustling Myeongdong shopping district for the cluebox. And that cluebox reveals the first Road Block of the Race: Who wants to make something fit for a king?

TARPHDM14

For this Road Block, teams must learn how to make kkultarae or honey string candy. In Korea, it is also known as “the king’s dessert,” once a staple on royal tables. Once teams have been able to make enough candy to fill two boxes for sale, they will receive the next clue. And a box of candy for them to enjoy later.

TARPHDM14

Teams must now hop onto the subway to get them to Dongdaemun Station and then search the nearby Cheonggyecheon Stream for their next clue.

TARPHDM14

But! Teams will also find the Forced Double U-Turn Vote Board, if activated.

After checking in at the U-Turn, teams will open the clue to reveal… a 2nd Road Block!!!! Who’s not afraid of going down? There are no restrictions as to who can perform this Road Block.

TARPHDM14

For this Road Block, teams must first make their way to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

TARPHDM14

Once there, the Road Block participant will make their way to the rooftop and rappel down the side of the futuristic complex to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM14

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any Racer does both Road Blocks on this Leg, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

TARPHDM14

Teams can now hop into a taxi to take them to the Gwangmyeong Velodrome where they will find HOURS OF OPERATION! The velodrome will open at 7am, but teams must take an entrance ticket now which will allow up to three teams to enter the velodrome every six minutes.

TARPHDM14

For this task inside the velodrome, teams must suit up and each ride a bike around the circuit for 25 laps within a certain amount of time. If they can beat the clock, they will be given the next clue.

TARPHDM14

Teams will now make their way to the largest IKEA store in the world, located in Gwangmyeong.

TARPHDM14

IKEA is soon to open its first store in the Philippines. For this task, teams must assemble four of IKEA’s most popular products and prepare a display that will be used in promotional materials for the launch of the company’s first Philippine store. When approved, teams will be given the next clue AND an IKEA token which they must keep until further notice.

TARPHDM14

After IKEA, teams must make their way to the Korean Folk Village in Gyeonggi-do. And here they will find the Detour: Drum or Drama.

The Korean Folk Village in Gyeonggi-do has been used as a filming location for countless historical dramas. For both Detours, teams must dress the part in order to deliver either performance.

TARPHDM14

In Drum, teams must learn and perform a traditional Korean drum routine. On their own!

TARPHDM14

In Drama, teams must learn and perform a scene from a popular Korean historical drama. In Korean!

TARPHDM14

After completing the Detour, teams must find the U-Turn Reveal Board before retrieving the next clue.

TARPHDM14

That clue points teams to Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon.

TARPHDM14

Once here, each team member must hit a target with a bow and arrow before they can run to the Pit Stop…

TARPHDM14

…which is just nearby the archery range.

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+. Half will automatically go to the charity of their choice and the other half can be used however the teams see fit.

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

Whew! This is one of those very, VERY full TARPHDME Legs that really have tasks enough to fill 2½ to 3 full TARUS Legs, tbh.

But this is TARPHDME. Full Legs that really challenge teams =) (It also helps that the Seoul Metropolitan area is very Google scoutable. Hehe.

Anyway, let’s start at the beginning of the Leg. There are really only two flights from Nadi to Seoul that would make sense. The 3½ hour difference between flights would honestly be a nightmare. But that’s why Hours of Operation exist. I think it’s fine to have that here since the Legs is still very full once the Race is back up and running in the morning.

First, unlike TAR29, this Leg will fully use the Seoul subway to our entertainment advantage. As much as possible, this Leg will have teams using the subway and hopefully getting lost and confused in it. Especially during rush hour when the trains really do get completely filled. That should be enough to fill a couple minutes worth of an episode right there.

Thinking about what teams could do in the late evening, I immediately remembered this video:

I thought it was fun and it should be a nice little task here. Straightforward enough for a quick Road Block in the evening. And of course, we have to get that Filipino-speaking guy to be the cluegiver.

Next up is an evening visit to Cheonggyecheon Stream which should look great on TV. But the highlight for this section of the Leg is the very stunning DDP, Dongdaemun Design Plaza and rappelling off the roof, AT NIGHT! Crazy right? But on TARPHDME, anything and everything is possible! (Within reason lol) And this should yield some AMAZING, STUNNING 4K UHD drone shots.

I also didn’t include any restriction like needing each team member to do one of the two Road Blocks just so I could make it a Trigger Point. lol

The Gwangmyeong Velodrome I found while looking for things to do near the IKEA. And this would be a great task to have in general I think. Looks like a great location and indoor cycling isn’t something that’s been done before on TARPHDME.

And about IKEA, I found out about it being the largest in the world while looking for things to do outside of Seoul. So I thought, sure why not and get them as a new sponsor. =) Especially with IKEA opening in the Philippines soon. TARPHDME is doing very well, after all. Companies are just lining up to get their brands on the show! #FakeNews

Also, this task will tie in to a future Leg, so that’s always good.

The Detour is definitely something that should be done on any TAR visit to Korea. Both sides are good and would be perfect on an early Leg with many teams. The drum side of the Detour is pretty straightforward and definitely a nice cultural task. But the Korean drama side of the Detour is great and highlights just how big Korean dramas have become around the world. It’s certainly a typical TAR task, but with added relevance being in Korea.

Finally, the simple archery task right before/next to the Mat at the Pit Stop should be one last bit of drama and fun for a very, VERY full Leg. Imagine failing over and over while seeing teams running to the Mat. Fun TV!
