Leg 8 – “Why don’t you want my nuts?!”

TARPHDM13

The Race continues with teams hopping on a train to the city of Porto!

TARPHDM13

Teams must deport from Santa Apolonia Station in Lisbon to the iconic Sao Bento station in Porto where they will find their next clue.

TARPHDM13

At the train station, teams must “Find a chapel on foot that looks like this wall.”

TARPHDM13

Teams must figure out that they are looking for Santa Catarina or Almas Chapel. Here, they will choose a blue tile and their next clue which reveals the Road Block: Who can handle azulejos with care?

TARPHDM13

For this Road Block, teams must head to Monumento a Garrett on foot and assemble a puzzle using these traditional Portuguese blue tiles known as azulejos. They must find the puzzle that matches the picture on their tile. Once their puzzle is complete, teams will receive the next clue. If they assemble the wrong puzzle (not matching the tile they chose), they must start over.

TARPHDM13

Teams can now take a taxi to Solar do Vinho do Porto where they will find the Detour: On the Water or Open Fire. Teams can also take a taxi to either Detour location.

TARPHDM13

For On the Water, teams must make their way to Calem Port Lodge to collect two barrels of port wine from the winery. They will then roll them onto a boat which they will row across the river and then deliver to a nearby restaurant along the ribeira to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM13

In Open Fire, teams will choose a local vendor along the ribeira who will give them their chestnut cart. Teams must pick up a sack of chestnuts from a nearby address and then roast the chestnuts which they must completely sell along the ribeira to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM13

After the Detour, teams must search along the Duoro River for the Double U-Turn board and check in, if activated.

TARPHDM13

Teams must now take the Funicular dos Guindais up to Pelourinho do Porto for their next clue.

TARPHDM13
TARPHDM13

That clue tells teams to head to the stunning Livraria Lello and search the bookstore for their next clue.

TARPHDM13

That clue tells teams to make their way on foot to the artistic Rua de Miguel Bombarda.

TARPHDM13

From here, each team member must carry a large artistic letter and deliver it on foot to the Palacio de Cristal.

TARPHDM13

And this is the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race. The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

TARPHDM13

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

TARPHDM13

ALSO! This is the Trigger Point for this Leg of the Race. If any team failed to make their way on foot at any point during this Leg when told, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg of the Race.

“Director’s” Commentary

A very nice, full Leg in Porto I think. Definitely a throwback to TAR3. But with lots of interesting tasks that could really throw teams into tailspins. Woohoo!

This will definitely be a walking-heavy Leg to increase the possibility of drama and tension. It all starts at the Sao Bento station with its famous walls. And of course that leads to the chapel and eventually the Road Block, all to feature the azulejos of Portugal.

The Road Block is a tweaked version of TAR23’s Detour task, but more challenging.

The Solar do Vinho do Porto would’ve made a nice Pit Stop as well, but it wouldn’t have fit with the walking at the end of the Leg. So it’s in a good spot here before the Detour.

For the Detour, I definitely wanted to have the TAR3 barrel-rolling/delivering task. It’s challenging, but even more importantly, allows us to get our 4K UHD drone shots over the river. Yaaas! The chestnuts side of the Detour is typical TAR.

The funicular is a must here and it allows for more scenic shots of Porto. Same for the famous bookstore.

The last task I just stumbled upon while Google scouting Porto and added it in at the end to add that extra Pit Stop drama, maybe.

The Trigger Point is also fun this Leg because you never know when teams don’t read their clue properly.

Overall another great Leg in Portugal.
