Leg 5 – “I think my ano is frozen!”

TARPHDM13

Teams are magically taken back to Tel Aviv where they will receive the first clue on this 5th Leg of the Race. And that clue tells teams they will be leaving the hot desert of Israel and flying to the glaciers of Greenland!

All teams will be on the same flight via Copenhagen arriving in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland at 9:55am.

TARPHDM13

Once in Kangerlussuaq, teams must choose a four wheel drive, Kia-sponsored vehicle and driver who will take them to the Ice Cap. They will be given a GPS navigator and a set of coordinates which they will use to search the ice cap on foot for their next clue.

TARPHDM13

That clue tells teams to fly to Ilulissat on a flight departing tomorrow morning at 8:25am. Until then, teams will be able to enjoy the night in Kangerlussuaq and the stunning northern lights.

TARPHDM13

Upon arrival in Ilulissat at 9:10am, teams must search the area outside the airport for their next clue. And that clue reveals the Road Block: Who’s feeling kind of mushy?

TARPHDM13

In this Road Block, teams will guide a dog sled team along a marked course where they must grab six flags. They will exchange the flags for supplies at a nearby camp and return to the starting point. Teams will then exchange the supplies for their next clue. The non-participating team member will also sit on the sled with the supplies, but cannot in any way help their teammate during the Road Block.

TARPHDM13

After the Road Block, teams must check in at the Double Rewind board. Any team who has been forced to Rewind must perform the entire Road Block over again.

TARPHDM13

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg. If the Rewind is used, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

TARPHDM13

Teams must now find waiting helicopters for their next clue. Before hopping into the helicopters, however, teams will check in at the Yield board if it has been activated on this Leg.

TARPHDM13

Teams must now take a helicopter ride to the village of Oqaatsut where they will face the Detour: Hang Out or On Line.

TARPHDM13

In Hang Out, teams must properly prepare 40 halibuts for drying on these traditional racks. Once approved, they will receive their next clue.

TARPHDM13

In On Line, teams must untangle and correctly prepare halibut bait lines which they must then load onto a waiting fishing boat to receive their next clue.

TARPHDM13

After the Detour, teams can hop onto a boat to take them back to Ilulissat.

By the water, teams will open the next clue which directs them to carry two single person kayaks to the nearby ice fjord where they will kayak through icebergs to search for a floating cluebox.

TARPHDM13

That clue tells teams they can make their way back to the town and find Knud Rasmussen Museum, the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

TARPHDM13

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

I always love having climate whiplash between Legs. And Greenland has been on my TARPHDME (or really, TAR in general) wishlist for a long time. So I thought this was the perfect time to maneuver a way for Greenland to fit on a route. It’d also be an excellent location for an international All-Stars Race as well.

So this route was hard to really put together at first because I had a list of countries that definitely had to be visited. Japan and China were set as the first three Legs and I definitely wanted Greenland and then thought of adding Israel Legs as well in this early part of the Race. There were a few other countries that originally would have been visited before Greenland, but logistics looked like hell! lol

Interestingly enough, the limited flights to Greenland actually helped things work itself out as an easy connection between Tel Aviv and Greenland existed with Copenhagen.

The next logistical challenge appeared to be in Greenland itself. The Leg was to be centered around Ilulissat as there was more to do there and in the area (according to my Google scouting trip) than in Kangerlussuaq which had the easy connection.

Again, the limited flights worked in our favor. And also again, like in Israel, our TARPHDME-exclusive 4K UHD drone cameras will be put to good and full use here!

First, the opening Route Marker task gets teams onto the ice cap for some stunning 4K footage of them wandering around on the frozen landscape. For many, if not all of the teams left at this point, they are not used to ice and freezing weather. So that should definitely make for some great television and human experience.

Instead of flying the teams off immediately, Kangerlussuaq is apparently a perfect location to see the aurora. So why pass up the opportunity for some 4K footage of the northern lights and for teams to get to see it in person as well.

Once in Ilulissat, teams will mostly be making their way around town on foot. The dog sled Road Block is pretty standard TAR. But the awesome dogs are awesome. And why pass up an opportunity to feature them? =) It also gets teams into pure snow this time as opposed to the ice in the first task.

With the Rewind, it was never included in the Trigger Point twist so it’ll be an interesting and provoking power that I’m not sure is completely fair. But we’ll throw it in there anyway.

Can’t pass up a helicopter ride over the glaciers as well. Originally I had teams taking the boat to Oqaatsut. But I saw helicopters and thought why not? =)

I definitely wanted a task involving the everyday chores of the local people. And what can be more local than fishing? I found the perfect tasks for a Detour in Oqaatsut.

And finally, kayaking through the ice fjord completes the trifecta of visiting the ice cap, deep snow and now floating icebergs. Should be an amazing experience.

As for this Leg, it’s a challenging and physical Leg, I think. Especially braving the elements for these teams who are likely all tropical or mild-weathered people (except the possible TAR Canada teams of course). It’d also likely be the toughest Leg to get eliminated on.
