Recap: Kamen Rider Wizard, Episode 49 – The Start of the Sabbath

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Yamamoto charges toward Haruto and slaps him around before Haruto henshins. They battle, but Haruto is completely overwhelmed by the newest mage even as Flame Dragon.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Koyomi hears the commotion and goes outside only to see Haruto be forced to dehenshin. She wants to run over to him, but Fueki grabs her arm and says he now has a full set.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Sora watches from the bushes, as Haruto is unconscious on the ground.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Meanwhile, Kosuke is in his Underworld. Chimera hovers over him, trying to wake him up. Which he does.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Kosuke finds himself back at the shop with Wajima, Shunpei and Rinko. Shunpei tells Kosuke about Yuzuru disappearing with Mayu while Wajima and Rinko tell him about Haruto going to Fueki’s.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Haruto wakes up in the magical dimension with Mayu. Fueki appears with Yuzuru and Yamamoto who are completely under Fueki’s control, having forced them to become mages against their will.

Fueki says the four of them will become pillars for the new Sabbath. Yamamoto and Yuzuru bring Koyomi to a pillared clearing and set her down on a seal stone.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Mayu tries to understand as Haruto explains Koyomi’s situation. What could Fueki have meant about them being human pillars? Haruto takes it to mean that he is still of use after all. He thought he had become a mage to protect people and to be the hope for others. That’s why he’s been working so hard. But if becoming a human pillar saves Koyomi, then maybe this is all for the best.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Rinko, Shunpei and Kosuke search Fueki’s home and see the strange drawing on the wall. Sora pops in and tells them that is the Sabbath formation.

Across town, Yamamoto and Yuzuru have chained Mayu to one pillar while Fueki is with Haruto at another.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Sora laughs as he explains Phantoms are not Fueki’s main objective in the Sabbath.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Fueki explains to Haruto that the Sabbath’s true purpose is to fill the Philosopher’s Stone with magical energy. It uses the power of the solar eclipse to draw the magical energy out of the Gates. The magical energy in the first Sabbath should have revived Koyomi, but it wasn’t enough, therefore Koyomi’s resurrection was incomplete.

This time, he will use the immense energy of the four mages as human pillars which should do the trick.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Sora, having just explained the same thing to Kosuke-tachi, says he thinks the Sabbath should just fail and they should be concentrating on finding Fueki instead.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Fueki explains to Haruto that using the four pillars allows him to cover all of Tokyo in a magic circle, allowing him to obtain a larger amount of magical energy from all the Gates in the city. The Gates are the sacrifices and the mages are just used to create the city-wide seal.

All the Gates in Tokyo will turn into Phantoms and everyone else will die.

Haruto says he’s the only sacrifice he needs and to leave everyone alone. This is going too far. But Fueki says nothing goes too far if it is to save his daughter, his final hope.

Fueki teleports away as all four mages are in position.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Koyomi wakes up as Fueki appears to her. You are my father? she asks. He says yes. She then asks then it is true that she has died.

Fueki explains she is “a doll in the shape of Koyomi” and he will now restore a soul into the body via the Sabbath.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Fueki henshins into White Wizard, then puts on a ring that brings about a solar eclipse.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

The sky above Tokyo turns dark and Fueki begins playing the flute which forces the four mages to henshin and magical energy to be drained from them, forming the seal covering the city.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Red cracks appear all over Tokyo, forcing people to the ground. Rinko and Shunpei, struggling against the energy, plead with an unaffected Kosuke to head to the center of the four pillars of light to stop Fueki.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Kosuke swears to stop the Sabbath no matter what and hurries over.
Koyomi pleads with Fueki to stop as the magical energy from the mages and the Gates in the city begin to fill her as she collapses.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Kosuke arrives and faces Fueki. He says he will save Koyomi as well as everyone in the city. He doesn’t know how, but he will.

Kosuke henshins and he and Fueki fight. Kosuke goes Hyper and they continue to battle.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

But Fueki gets the upper hand and delivers a devastating blow that brings Kosuke to his knees.

In the Underworld, Chimera appears to Kosuke, saying this must really be the end. But Kosuke says it is time he lets Chimera out to chow down on all the magical energy floating around above ground.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

You cannot do that, Chimera says, there is no way of knowing what will happen to Kosuke’s body without him.

That’s what makes things interesting, Kosuke says, not knowing what’ll happen.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Fueki wants to deliver the final blow, but Kosuke stands, grabs Fueki’s flute and stabs it right into his Beast Driver, releasing Chimera. Kosuke collapses and Chimera begins flying over the city gulping up all the magical energy in his path.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

As he does, the eclipse ends, the four mages are unchained and Tokyo is back to normal.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Chimera returns to the Sabbath site and knocks over Fueki before going over to Kosuke.

You can go ahead and eat me, Kosuke says. But an amused Chimera says he releases Kosuke from his servitude.

“From now on, you’re free! Nito Kosuke.”

Kosuke thanks Chimera and looks as his now inoperable driver.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Fueki gets up and can’t believe such a prehistoric mage managed to stop the Sabbath. He picks up his flute and wants to drive Kosuke to despair, but Kosuke says he won’t because he still has a final hope.

Kamen Rider Wizard 49

Kosuke motions over to Haruto who has just arrived.

“And I am… that final hope!”

Episode Thoughts
Now THAT was some epic sh*t! Like seriously.

As we finally get come clarity, the full picture, the last 48 episodes are put into perspective.

First, we see exactly what the endgame is. It was right under our noses the whole time. Emotionless Koyomi, the sketchiness of both Wiseman and White Wizard, the search for Gates and Phantoms, it all makes sense.

And second, wrapping up Kosuke’s story while in turn truly making Haruto “the final hope” sets up what should be an amazing finale. Yes?

I certainly hope so.

Anyway, I thought this episode was laid out excellently. The drama and tension built up nicely, the effects were (mostly) very good and the Kosuke-Fueki fight was great. Ending on Haruto’s “I’m the final hope” was a great cliffhanger too.

  1. I hate Fueki! If he really loved his daughter then why can’t he let Haruto live and everyone else? Sure can be cold at first but she came to love her friends and I really liked that Nitou-kun listen to Rinko to go and save Haruto. He seems to care a lot about Rinko. It’s hinted in tons of episodes after he joined. :). Damn the bastard Wiseman or whoever.

  2. Also Nitou-kun promised Rinko. Eeeeeeeh!(that’s fansqueling) I ship them to much. Sorry. They’re nice and looks like they’re really good friends. I thought that Haruto and Rinko were a couple but they’re not they’re a ton of Haruto/Rinko shippers
I think that I’m always on the oppersite side
    Ankh/Hina
    Tsukasa/Natsumi
    Nitou/Rinko. Well just everyone’s opinion.

  3. Was there ever a reason given why Wiseman would not just use Kosuke for the Sabbath? The guy is a mage also, technically. Also they apparently wanted Beast out of the way anyhow, so why not have it make more sense?
