Recap: Kamen Rider Wizard, Episode 36 – The Myna Bird Speaks

Wizard 36

Koyomi’s home alone, worrying about her housemates who’ve gone to the playground to talk about her. Specifically, what Sora said about Koyomi not being Phantom nor human and how she’s a puppet running on magical energy.

That’s kinda true though, Wajima says, since Koyomi wouldn’t be alive without Haruto’s magical energy. That’s okay, Haruto replies, Koyomi’s human no matter what.

Haruto then asks Wajima if he knows anything about the Philosopher’s Stone. Wajima recalls it is a mythical stone from the Middle Ages that is said to turn anything to gold. Haruto remembers when Koyomi brought him to the forest in search for a stone and thinks maybe he can find a clue there.

Wizard 36

Across town, Medusa and Sora are with Wiseman. She’s found a Gate and Sora’s already put Phantom Raum on the job. He’s an odd one, Sora remarks, as an odd man contently watches burning crates with his myna bird saying “Despair! Despair!”

Wizard 36

Next morning, Rinko is investigating the rash of arsons lately when she runs into Shunpei. While they are chatting, they recognize the odd man with the bird from the security cam video pass by. Rinko tries to bring him to the station, but Shunpei gets in her way and the man manages to run away.

Wizard 36

Rinko gets chewed out by her boss who spits white powder in her face after threatening to fire her if she doesn’t catch the arsonist.

Wizard 36

Haruto’s walking in the forest. Realizing he’s been walking in circles (like last time! durr…), he henshins into Infinity to break down what turns out to be a magical barrier. He finds the cave and walks right into Wiseman’s lair.

Medusa tells Wiseman she’ll take care of the wizard, but Wiseman stops her. He morphs from his human to Phantom form before coming out from behind the curtain.

Wizard 36

Wiseman says Haruto is very impressive for having been able to break down the barrier. But Haruto only wants answers from him; about the Sabbath, about Koyomi and about the Philosopher’s Stone.

First time Medusa’s heard anything about the Philosopher’s Stone. Wiseman says sometimes Ignorance is bliss. Haruto charges to attack, but Wiseman puts his hand out and sucks his magical energy, asking if he can use it.

Haruto gets sent back out into the forest and de-henshins.

Wizard 36

At the shop, Rinko is upset about the possibility of her being fired. Shunpei tries to apologize and asks what he can do to make it up to her. Rinko doesn’t appreciate Shunpei being defiant, but he says fine, he’ll go find the arsonist himself.

Wizard 36

Leaving a path of destruction at the shop, Shunpei and Rinko leave.

Wizard 36

Meanwhile, Haruto ponders what Wiseman’s role in all of this is when he sees Shunpei across the street. He shows people a picture of the arsonist and asks if they’ve seen him, but they just laugh. Turns out, it’s just his drawing of the arsonist. Haruto asks what’s going on, but Shunpei hears the myna bird and sees the odd man and runs off. Haruto follows.

Wizard 36

Rinko’s in the area asking around as well when she too sees the birdman. She’s in pursuit when, oof, she and Shunpei bump into each other. Haruto follows as they try to one-up each other so they can catch the arsonist first. But when they do catch up, the arsonist has already set another fire.

Haruto henshins into Water Style to put it out then quickly binds the odd man, forcing him to let go of his birdcage.

Wizard 36

Suddenly, a Phantom arrives and unbinds the man who runs away. Haruto tries to fight it, but it gets away.

Wizard 36

They see the bird in its cage and they go to Donut Happy where Rinko and Shunpei are still upset with each other. Haruto’s in the middle.

Wizard 36

And donut cart owner’s new friends donut doesn’t help the quarrelling friends.

Haruto decides to let them be and leaves. Rinko and Shunpei argue over whether capturing the suspect or protecting the Gate comes first. But the bird suddenly speaks an address, so Rinko and Shunpei hurry over.

It’s the apartment of one Nemoto Kazuyoshi. They barge in, but there’s no one there. The bird then says the corner convenience store. But he’s not there either, only his place of employment. The bird speaks again, this time Nanase Shinsei Park.

Wizard 36

Haruto finds a hungry Kosuke and he joins the search while Rinko and Shunpei find Nemoto. He is happy to see his bird again, but he denies committing arson.

Wizard 36 Wizard 36

Haruto and Kosuke see their friends, but suddenly the hill myna comes flying at them and morphs into the Phantom. Sora giggles nearby. He says Kaga-san is a bit strange. He’s not a hill myna, but can take the form of one.

Wizard 36

Haruto tells Kosuke to take care of the Phantom while he wants to ask Sora a question. Sora’s not interested and reminds him that they’ll fight later. He summons some Ghouls to keep him occupied, but then says, isn’t there something else Haruto should be doing?

Wizard 36

Turns out Nemoto is a Gate and he is upset when he finds his bird is gone. A patrol car passes by and Rinko fills them in on what’s going on. But Nemoto, still on his knees, continues to plead his innocence to Shunpei.

Wizard 36 Wizard 36

Okay, Shunpei says and he tells Nemoto to run. They knock the two cops over and jump into the patrol car. Rinko tries to stop Shunpei, but hops in when Shunpei drives away.

Sora giggles as he sends the Phantom away. Haruto tries to use Drago Timer, but it appears he doesn’t have enough magical energy. He ends up de-henshining and asks Kosuke to take care of the Ghouls.

Wizard 36

Meanwhile, Shunpei is speeding away. Rinko asks just what Shunpei thinks he’s doing.

“I’m protecting the Gate.”

Wizard 36

Episode Thoughts
Well that was a very fun episode. Loved the Rinko-Shunpei stuff and it was nice to see a balance between their fun and Haruto’s more serious material with Wiseman and all that stuff.

Now, that bird! Not a surprise that it ended up being the Phantom, somehow, but it was still an “Oh shit!” moment, like something out of a primetime crime procedural. That was also very fun.

And, knock some sense into me, but Wiseman’s shadow looked very much like Wajima. Like, damn. lol

Wizard 36

I don’t even know. Honestly, what I do know is I enjoyed this episode a lot more than Sora’s big backstory reveal. =( That kind of makes me sad.

Can’t wait to see the next episode. Hope it’s a good episode for Shunpei.

  1. The highlight of the episode was the manga style they used to show Kou being attacked by the birds. It was pretty clever. The lesson they gave nemoto was ok and the plot twist at the end too, even though it was strange and the next ep preview doesn’t show them dealing with it. Overall, it was very boring.
