Medusa turns to Mayu who is excited to see her sister, but Rinko holds her back, telling her she’s not her sister, she’s a Phantom.
While Kosuke and Shunpei take care of the Gate, Haruto and Rinko bring Mayu to the shop.
She tells them about being abroad when her parents and Misa went missing. They had encouraged her to take the opportunity to study in America, her sister Misa being her biggest supporter.
Misa had given her the keychain of their family, saying whether the opportunity is a beginning or an end is up to her.
Even when she learned they were missing, she was resolved to continue on and study well with the hope that she’d be able to see them one day.
Sora finds Medusa in Misa and Mayu’s old home. Having a little sister was definitely not in her original plans. She tells him to take care of the Gate for her if he really wants to help.
At the shop, Haruto brings Mayu to the room she can spend the night in. She thanks him for his help, but also wonders if there’s any way Misa might still be alive in the Phantom.
Already knowing the answer, Mayu apologizes and cries after Haruto leaves the room.
Next morning, Kosuke and Shunpei are camped outside the Gate’s home as Rinko accompanies her outside for them to head over to the shop. But before they can leave, Ghouls pop up in front of them.
Kosuke henshins.
They’re having breakfast at the shop when Mayu gets a text message that makes her tell them she wants to head back to the dorm, needing some time alone to think. Before Haruto can accompany her out, Rinko calls.
Rinko and Shunpei take the Gate to safety as Sora arrives and battles Kosuke.
Mayu re-reads the text message she received. It’s from “Misa” telling Mayu that she’s the only one who can save her and to come to their old home alone.
Haruto arrives and joins Kosuke against Sora who giggles and gives them a little piece of info.
Mayu arrives at her family’s old home. Medusa’s on the couch and begins playing along with a happy and excited Mayu. Mayu shows her the key chain Misa had given her of their family and tells her how that helped get her through the painful times without them.
Medusa smiles. Now she knows what to use to drive Mayu to despair.
Sora gleefully tells the others that Mayu is a Gate. Haruto goes Hurricane Dragon and he and Rinko fly off to Mayu’s home.
Medusa drops the first bomb on Mayu. There’s not a single ounce of Misa left in her. She’s Medusa, a Phantom.
Mayu asks about her parents. Where are they? Medusa laughs, calls them fools and recounts exactly how she killed them with her own hands. She takes the key chain and smashes it with the same hands.
Mayu is beyond devastated as the cracks of her Underworld begin to appear. Haruto and Rinko arrive.
Sora decides to back off Kosuke and the other Gate since he thinks things are more interesting across town.
Medusa and Haruto take the battle outside and under a bridge. Haruto tries to use Drago Timer, but Medusa won’t let him. Rinko struggles to bring Mayu outside, pleading with Haruto to hurry and help before the Phantom is born.
But Medusa forces Haruto to de-henshin.
He can only watch as Mayu pushes Rinko off of her and the cracks begin to engulf her.
Medusa laughs.
“You bitch!”
The Phantom begins to work its way out of Mayu, but she starts to remember Misa’s words of encouragement. She starts crying out for Misa and the cracks disappear.
She’s controlled the Phantom, just like Haruto did.
“Misa-chan… Oneechan saved me.”
Mayu tells Medusa she won’t let someone like her end her life.
Suddenly, the White Wizard arrives. Watching from behind a nearby tree, Sora is excited.
The White Wizard drives Medusa away and turns to Mayu. He commends her for surviving and not losing hope. And by doing so, she’s earned the right to become a mage herself. He invites her to join him to fight against the Phantoms who killed her parents and sister.
“That is the only path for you.”
He holds out his hand. Haruto calls out to wait, but White Wizard says it’s her decision.
And she decides to go.
“This is the beginning that I have chosen.”
The White Wizard puts a ring on Mayu’s finger, tells Haruto they’ll meet again and they Teleport Now.
“Is he trying to turn Mayu-chan into a mage?”
Episode Thoughts
Now that’s an episode! Yes. Loved it.
Wizard has tackled some very dark stuff despite having plenty of slapstick and over the top comedy. This episode was another great example of how in the world that could possibly work. Medusa killed Papa and Mama for goodness sakes! And that was after Shunpei exploded out of Kosuke’s tent.
After watching last week’s episode, I knew there were a lot of directions they could take Medusa and Mayu. I expected a tragic ending. Either Medusa dies and Mayu has to watch or Mayu herself has to die or even become a Phantom herself.
It wasn’t surprising Mayu was a Gate, but those scenes were still amazing. What I definitely did not expect was Mayu being able to control the Phantom. At this point, I was all hyped up and ready to see her henshin into a brand new Rider. I definitely hope that’s the case.
Much kudos to Nakayama Erina for a standout performance in this episode. She’s been great as Medusa, but it was awesome to see her play the complete opposite with Mayu. And side by side too! I was sad to see Phoenix sent off to the sun, but I am very excited to see Medusa isn’t going anywhere and we’ve got another possibly kick-awesome new character too.
Loved this episode.

This was overall a pretty good episode, possibly one of the best of the series. Sadly I think this is about the time where it was going downhill.
Also I think you did a mistake. While Mayu did manage to control her phantom, the fact is that she did not do it like Haruto did. He literally refused to give into despair by sheer willpower and the promise he made to his parents. Mayu on the other hand managed to do it by realizing that this thing in front of her is not her sister Misa, as Misa would have never done or said what she did, ergo there was no reason to despair enough to let a phantom out. It is kind of a cop-out but I can give them points for trying, unlike with what comes next.
As for Mayu becoming some kick-ass Rider: I never had any hopes in that regard simply for the fact that she is a girl, well the character, not the actress, and Kamen Rider simply does not have a good track record when it comes to female Kamen Riders. I think most of them are dead or depowered.
Yeah, I definitely know Toei and Bandai’s resistance to female heroes They’d probably have an all-male Sentai team if they could get away with it. =(
I find this refusal to have female main characters or in non-genderstereotypical ways to be especially irritating consider the looks and sometimes behaviors of their male Riders, especially guys like Phillip in Kamen Rider W. I think the only Kamen Rider that could be considered traditionally masculine was Date from OOO, all others looked rather boyish, more or less.
So what is with their aversion regarding female Kamen Riders?
lol That’s a great point actually! We all know they love to cast handsome idol actors as the leads.
Are they really targeting boys or possible fangirls? hehe
But really, it’s as if little girls wouldn’t want to buy female superhero toys? Very strange and definitely annoying practice.
Well most superhero toys are not even tried to be targeted towards girls so I doubt that would even occur to them, and considered how they had Beast act when he pretended to be a girl I think they have some stereotypical ideas about female characters.
They might be targeted boys but who knows what sort of fanboys,
Of course considered the web movies I think Wizard has possibly the highest Yaoi factor so far, so they might try to target girls after all.
It is possible however that they did try to do more with Wizard. Considered the inclusion of Rinko and Owner, we have well… Owner is pretty stereotypical but they never hide what his interests are, its especially evident in the Wizard Fourze movie. And Rinko is probably the least stereotypical female character on Kamen Rider who actualyl gets things done since Den-O. After all the women on Kiva… yeah… no comment on them.
I really thought Mayu in Wizard was going to be the start of something, but of course she only popped in when they remembered she existed.
And yet her story was the most compelling of the three extra wizards. You will see what I mean when we get to the other two.
Btw. You might like this fan version of Mayu aka Kamen Rider Witch: http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/351/d/c/kamen_rider_witch_by_dezet08-d6yaes1.jpg
