Recap: The Amazing Race 21, Episode 6 – Get Your Sexy On

The Leg

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

The teams set off from the Pit Stop and head to a travel agency to book tickets to Istanbul, Turkey.  No love loss between the Twinnies and Abbie & Ryan who think both the Twins and the Rockers are the most annoying teams on the Race.

At the travel agency, Nadiya picks up a wad of cash apparently dropped by James & Abba.  She, Natalie and Lexi decide to keep it for themselves and split it later on at the airport without telling the Rockers.

With their new lack of funds, James & Abba walk to a less poor area of Dhaka hoping to find if some more well-off locals can spare some cash.  And they do find some generous and welcoming people.

All 7 teams are on the same flight getting into Istanbul at 6:25am.

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

James & Abba are out of the airport first and head to Kabatas Ferry Terminal where they’ll find the next clue.  They and most other teams take a taxi, but Jaymes & James and Rob & Kelley decide the Metro would be faster.  They were wrong.

James & Abba open the next clue telling teams to take a ferry across the Bosphorus Strait from the Europe side of Istanbul to the Asia side to look for their next clue outside of Uskadar Terminal.

James & Abba are on the ferry by themselves, while Texas, Twinnies, Ryan & Abbie and Beekmans are on a 2nd.  Jaymes & James find out that taxis are faster than the Metro, so they get off early.  Rob & Kelley see them, but decide to stick to their guns.

The next clue tells teams to head to Misir Carsisi Spice Bazaar and find Store #14 for their next clue.

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

Trey & Lexi catch up to James & Abba at the Spice Market where they receive a clue box with some “Turkish Delights.”

For this Detour, teams will choose between two centuries old Turkish traditions.
In Simit, teams must deliver 200 Turkish bagels known as simits to three different addresses by carefully stacking them on a large tray and balancing it on their head.
In Scrub It, teams head to traditional Turkish bathhouse where they will get a deep body scrub by a bath attendant.

James & Abba, Trey & Lexi, Natalie & Nadiya and Abbie & Ryan choose Scrub It.  They collect their bath supplies and head to the bathhouse.

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

Josh & Brent, meanwhile, must first complete their Speed Bump.  They must search for a nearby marked ice cream vendor and each eat traditional Turkish ice cream.  They pass by the marked vendor and instead find another ice cream vendor.  Turns out Turkish ice cream is a little more fun than regular ol’ ice cream.  They finish up their cones and head back to the spice shop, but the shopkeeper says they haven’t “completed the exam.”  They realize their mistake and go find the marked ice cream vendor and complete the Speed Bump.  They head back to the spice shop to get the next clue and decide on the Simit Detour.

At the bathhouse, the teams are enjoying getting bathed, scrubbed, and slapped around (or massaged depending on how it feels).  Trey & Lexi finish first and get the next clue telling teams to head to Kapali Carsi and look for the marked fountain.

There, they find the Road Block.

In this Road Block, teams will dress up as a local vendor and carry around a large brass teapot known as an ibrik and use it to pour Turkish sherbet for people to buy for 1 lira a cup.  Once they’ve sold 40 cups, they can receive their next clue.

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

As Lexi and Ryan start the Road Block, Jaymes & James are just finishing up their baths.  Josh & Brent meanwhile finally find their first restaurant to deliver to and run into Rob & Kelley on their way to the next location.

At the sherbet, Lexi is doing very well.  So Ryan employs a man to be his broker and help him sell the drinks in exchange for commission.  Abba’s having his own trouble as Lexi finishes and she and Trey get the next clue directing them to the Pit Stop next to the ship Savarona.

Nadiya says she hopes Trey & Lexi win the leg over Abbie & Ryan because they deserve it.  Abbie is not happy.  When Ryan finishes, she tells him and he says they’re so juvenile and can “suck it.”

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

Jaymes & James arrive as Abba sells his 40, followed by Natalie.  The twins yell for the people to buy sherbet from James who is having trouble even keeping the ibrik on his shoulder.

At the Pit Stop, Trey & Lexi step on the Mat first and win a trip to Australia.  Abbie & Ryan finish 2nd, James & Abba are 3rd and Natalie & Nadiya are 4th.

Josh & Brent and Rob & Kelley arrive at the Bazaar and James has to hustle.  He finally sells his 40 sherbets and he and Jaymes are off to the Pit Stop where they officially check-in as Team #5.

TAR2106 TAR2106 TAR2106

It’s down to the last two.  Josh & Brent leave the Bazaar first, but they get stuck in traffic in a little alley street.  They get out to direct traffic as Rob & Kelley finish the Road Block.

But it is the Beekman Boys who check-in 6th with Rob & Kelly last and eliminated.

Episode Thoughts
I think this was definitely the best leg and episode of the season so far.  After the Saturday episode of The Amazing Race Philippines delivering so epicly, I was ready to be let down by original flavor TAR.  But this episode definitely delivered well.

The tasks were all great.  How can you not like seeing the teams half naked and getting rubbed down!? lol Those Turkish simits looked delicious.  And what better way to wash down those simits than with some sherbet.  You even got the ice cream Speed Bump, which I can give a pass to (I think we’re past giving passes to lame Speed Bumps though) since I had no idea you got a little show when you bought ice cream in Turkey.

Turkey itself looked great as well.  And the competition was exciting with all the teams equalized by the flight.  Great to see that familiar bathhouse from TARAu2, but with a different take on the task.

Overall, most complete episode of the season I think.  Hope they keep it up.

Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – Though they were in cahoots with the Twinnies over money-gate, they’ve moved up to #1 on my list.  This was an excellent leg for them.  They were enthusiastic (Lexi especially) and Raced almost perfectly against the entire field.  When they’re on, they’re on and unless they make some huge mistake, they’re in this for the long haul.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – They’re making a habit of hanging with the stragglers these days, but they’re doing just enough to keep themselves safe.  Maybe a little more exciting or too close for comfort than they’d like, but I still think they can go far.  They’ve got the right attitude when it comes to Racing.
Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – Now I love Natalie & Nadiya.  They are  hilarious and are strong competitors, but I definitely would not have taken James & Abba’s money.  Knowing it was their money, I would have given it back.  I wouldn’t in good conscience be able to take that money.  Now if I had found a wad of cash and on the floor and didn’t see who dropped it, then sure, I’d have taken it.  But knowing it was the Rockers’ money, they should’ve been honest about it.  Still think they’re awesome, but a lot less so now with this.
James & Mark James & Abba – Another strong leg for them.  They’re definitely stepping it up.  Much kudos to them for being able to overcome their stolen, yes stolen money situation.  But again, they have been Racing consistently well.  Hopefully Abba’s knee (or ankle?) won’t be too much of a problem for them
Abbie & Ryan Abbie & Ryan – They’re keeping it consistent and are still a very strong team.  I do think their rivalry with the Twins is all in good fun and I actually think that’s refreshing compared to the nasty rivalries of last season.   I’m about as glad as they were to get out of Bangladesh though just so we didn’t have to hear any more of them saying how horribly third world the country is.  We get it.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – The Speed Bump was not too bad for the and would’ve had even less effect if they went to the right vendor at first.  Their choice of Detour wasn’t the best either, but they were able to overcome both and push forward and with a little luck from Rob & Kelley’s decision to Metro instead of taxi it to the first clue.
Rob & Kelley Rob & Kelley – Well, they proved it only takes one little misstep to cost you the Race.  Their decision to take the Metro was definitely their undoing.  Rob saying his cockiness was just his way to pumping himself up and giving himself the drive to compete.  Hmm, I don’t know about that since it came off as just that, cocky and arrogant.  Oh well.
Quotes from Episode 21.06

Ryan: “Next time you’re at home and your Samsung 52-inch starts to go fuzzy on you, don’t bitch about it, go to Dhaka.”

Natalie: “No animosity, but they’re two weirdos.”

Jaymes: “Fly to Istanbul, Turkey… I could go for some turkey right now, I’m hungry.”

Lexi: “I was just being loud and obnoxious, like I normally am.”

Brent: “I may not be a Chippendale, but I can work a costume.”

James: “Hello ladies, can I get you a nice cold drink?”
*Ladies walk past*
James: “It’s the hat, isn’t it?”
