Recap: The Amazing Race 21, Episode 2 – No Hair, Don’t Care

The Leg

Abbie & Ryan open the first clue of the leg telling teams to head to Surabaya, Indonesia… AND that the winners of the leg will win the Express Pass.

The teams head to the airport.  While all the teams are getting tickets on Garuda Airlines via Jakarta, Rob & Kelley believe they’ve scored the best flight on Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, but with a four hour layover.

The nine teams arrive in Jakarta and James & Abba hurry to get on a flight leaving for Surabaya an hour earlier than everyone else.  Team Long Hair arrive in Surabaya and take a taxi to Alun Alun Stadium where they find numbers and an Hours of Operation.

The sign says Bull Racing at 8am, so this allows Rob & Kelley to catch up to the other nine teams.

The teams are let into the stadium.  Here, each team member will hop onto the back of a motorcycle and race against a pair bulls in the traditional Karapan sapi to receive their next clue.

Teams must now make their way to the Genteng Kali Bridge for their next clue where they find the Road Block.

In this Road Block, teams must choose four children who will hop on a pedal-powered ride known as an Odong-odong.  While teams are pedaling, they’ll have to make a balloon hat and a balloon animal for each of the four kids, a total of eight, to receive their next clue.

Lexi finishes first with Amy right behind and teams must now head to Wajiya Motors for their next clue.  On the way, Amy & Daniel discover they’ve lucked out with their taxi driver.   They get lost.

Meanwhile, alliance members Trey & Lexi and Natalie & Nadiya get the next clue and find the Detour.
In Ice by the Pound, teams must collect ten 65 pound blocks of ice from the ice maker, slide them through a hole and load them onto a truck which will take them to Pasar Pabean Market.  They’ll then unload the ice and use a cart to deliver the blocks in exchange for their next clue.
In Fish by the Barrel, teams head to Pasar Pabean Market where they’ll carry two barrels of fish to a marked stall where they’ll sort them and prepare a stall for business to receive their next clue.

Tery & Lexi choose Ice while Natalie & Nadiya choose Fish.  Back at the Road Block, Will is struggling bad and Gary tries to calm him down and encourage as they are trailing in last place.  Across town though, Amy & Daniel and now Rob & Kelley are struggling with their taxi drivers.

As Abbie & Ryan and Jaymes & James start on the Ice, Will finally finishes the Road Block and they hope they’re still in it.

Natalie & Nadiya hurry through the Fish Detour and finish just before Trey & Lexi and the Ice.  Teams must now search the Pasar Pabean Market for the Pit Stop.

The Twins run through the market alleys until they find Phil and the Mat where they officially claim 1st place and the Express Pass.  Trey & Lexi finish 2nd and both teams are happy each other is in the top.

All doing the Ice Detour, Jaymes & James, Abbie & Ryan, and Josh & Brent finish 3rd through 5th respectively.

Meanwhile, Rob & Kelley are upset and Amy & Daniel are frustrated with their taxis and no one seeming to know where Wajiya Motors is.  While James & Abba and Brittany & Caitlin finish the Detour and check-in at the Pit Stop as Teams # 6 and 7 respectively, Gary & Will catches up to Rob & Kelley as they are neck and neck at the Ice Detour.

But it is Rob & Kelley who finish first and step on the Mat in 8th.  Gary & Will are relieved to check-in as Team #9 and Amy & Daniel are disappointed when they arrive last and are eliminated.

Episode Thoughts
I thought this was a much better episode than last week.  A lot more unpredictable.

First, since the Express Pass was up for grabs this leg, I thought the Hours of Operation for the bull racing was a good thing to have.  It leveled the playing field as if it were the first leg so everyone had a chance to go for it.

Now, the bull racing itself.  It seems like it would be an interesting task, but it kind of fell flat.  On one hand, I’ve always liked them having Route Markers and tasks outside of Detours and Road Block during the leg.  But I was a little disappointed since it wasn’t as exciting as it could have been.  Maybe it was supposed to be a Road Block and teams were supposed to be the ones actually racing between the bulls?  That would’ve been more awesome.  But some have said it’d be dangerous as hell.  I don’t know.  It’s not like they’re being dragged through the mud by a bull or something.  They’d never do something like that on TAR.

Oh… wait.

Anyway… the Road Block was fun, if only because kids were involved.  Kids have always been great on TAR, especially as part of tasks.  And the Detour was great.  It might have been one of the more physical tasks in a long time.

Natalie & Nadiya Natalie & Nadiya – I love them.  Not only are they absolutely hilarious, they Race well too.  And forming an alliance with another potentially strong team in Trey & Lexi should definitely help even more.  I hope the Express Pass “curse” continues, in that all the teams that have ever won the Express Pass have made the final 3.  I’d love the Twinnies to go all the way.
Amy & Daniel Amy & Daniel – It always sucks when a team with lots of potential gets screwed by a bad taxi.  Amy & Daniel were definitely competitive and did very well these last two legs.  But as always, one bad taxi driver can mean the end of the road.  It’s unfortunate they had to be eliminated so early.
Trey & Alexis Trey & Lexi – A much better leg for them and maybe a better indicator on how they’ll Race in the future.  Lexi killed at the Road Block and flew through the Detour.  They definitely could be a contender if they keep it up.  And working with Natalie & Nadiya could be mutually beneficial.
Jaymes & James Jaymes & James – A better performance from them this leg.  They remind me of Joey & Danny from last season.  Big alpha males who you’d expect to be uber-competitive and standoffish, but are actually fun, sometimes goofy guys.  Can’t really get a handle on how well they can Race, but they’re moving in the right direction.
Abbie & Ryan Abbie & Ryan – A much quieter leg from them, but still solid.  With Amy & Daniel gone, that’s one less strong team for them to go up against, so they’re chances get better moving forward.  Definitely still a team to look out for.
Gary & Will Gary & Will – Definitely a rough leg for them, especially for Will.  They’re going to need to put this leg behind them and focus on the next one.  It was a close call, but they can’t let their frustrations get the better of them.
Caitlin & Brittany Caitlin & Brittany – An extremely quiet leg from them.  Except for that funny scene of them trying to navigate a 1-inch high bump in the road during the Detour, they were pretty much invisible this leg.  I don’t know if that’s a sign they’re out soon or that they make it to the end.
Josh & Brent Josh & Brent – A quiet leg from them.  Like Caitlin & Brittany, they were pretty invisible this episode.  They didn’t even show them completing the Detour.  An interesting editing choice to say the least.
James & Mark James & Abba – What started out as a great leg for them ended up so-so thanks to a mildly bad taxi.  They might actually be a darkhorse if they keep Racing well enough.
Rob & Kelley Rob & Kelley – Definitely a rough leg for them.  An almost fatal plane mistake that shows you’ve gotta check all flights and make sure you’re really getting the first flight INTO your destination.  But it was the taxi that really set them behind.  Not sure how far they can make it though.
Quotes from Episode 21.02

Ryan: “I’m sweating behind the kneecaps, which is an awkward place to sweat.”

Nadiya: “Growing up third world, some of the stuff we’re doing, people are scared of the roads, scared of the beggars, that stuff is like… these are our homeboys.”

Natalie: “We’re just badass, the most badass Sri Lankans you’ll ever meet!”

Natalie: “Only thing is, all my sweaty makeup is gonna be on this… fish.”

Natalie: “I want to take the fish and rub it on my face, I’m so hot.”

Phil: “Oh my God, you guys stink.  Thank you for sharing your smell with me.”

Local: “There is no information in Indonesia.”
