Review: KBS’ Rock Rock Rock – A Fascinating and Haunting Look at the Rise of a Legend

The four part drama special Rock Rock Rock on KBS is a fascinating and haunting look at the legend of the “nation’s grandma,” the living legend Kim Tae Won.

The founder, lead guitarist, songwriter, and face of Boohwal, one of the biggest rock bands to come out of Korea, is probably best known as one of the hilarious misfits on the variety series Qualifications of Men. ButRock Rock Rock reveals Kim’s turbulent life, from growing up with a dream to the dark side of success. The highest of highs to the lowest of lows, the drama special is an engrossing look at the rise of a legend.

Rocker turned actor No Min Woo is absolutely engaging as Kim Tae Won, being able to capture his enigmatic and unique character from lovesick teen with a dream to struggling musician to overnight star.

The four hours will pass by very quickly, almost feeling like four hours isn’t enough to really go through Kim Tae Won’s eventful life. But the quick pacing helps build the excitement and the drama.

One moment you’re cheering him on, the next moment, you are feeling the same pain Kim is feeling. (And boy is it painful!) Much credit goes to No Min Woo for his powerful performance.

At the end of the series, you can’t help but become a fan of Kim Tae Won and Boohwal. The band’s songs becoming even more meaningful after having their true origins revealed in the drama.

Just an absolutely engaging biopic of a living legend.

Take a listen to this hauntingly beautiful song form 1987.
“Remember,” Boowhwal
