Hindsight Review – Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho, a Thrilling and Heartbreaking Ride

TYPE OF REVIEW : HINDSIGHT REVIEW
No spoilers.

It is hard to review a miniseries just after seeing one part of it. That one part could be amazing, but then everything is downhill from there. Or, that first part could be nothing special but builds itself up into a fine series.

And so it can be with Korean dramas, most of which are closed-ended 16 or 20 episode miniseries. Earlier this year, reviewing my first Korean dramas, I waited until seeing the entire series to critique. But during the Summer, I was so amazed by three Korean dramas that I just couldn’t wait to sing their praises.

Now that I am close to finishing them, do I still feel the same way about the series as I did when I first reviewed them? Here’s the first of what I call my Hindsight Review.

I raved about KBS’ Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho (Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child/구미호: 여우누이뎐) in my review last month as a thrilling and easily accessible drama about a gumiho (or nine-tailed fox of Korean legend) and her daughter.

And after seeing all sixteen episodes, I still feel the same way about the series. The story continuously built up to the exciting and satisfyingly heartbreaking finale.

The series had the right amount of suspense, melodrama, and romance to stay fresh throughout its run. And while it may have felt a little stretched out in the middle, the captivating performances of the two young stars Kim Yoo Jung and Seo Shin Ae more than carried the show through any rough patches.

Their performances rivaled performances from actors three times their age on any of the best dramas of the year; emotional and gripping, either actress would leave anyone in awe.

KBS seems to have found a lot of winning series this year and Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho is certainly one of their best of the year. I am so happy to have taken a chance on it and it didn’t let me down.

An awesome, fun, and thoroughly enjoyable ride.

  1. An nyong haseyo! You are righht, this drama is one of a kind. It is very nice drama.

One thing that I like m0st in this drama is the love of Gu Sun-daek to her daughter Yeon-yi. Another thing too, it’s soundtracks. It is very nice. If you know the title of the soundtracks on this drama, will you post it on your blogs too? Kumapta!
