Brain/Heart/Gut: The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Your brain tells you one thing and your heart tells you another. But then there’s a gut feeling you just can’t brush off. Here are my picks for Sunday’s Emmy Awards, airing live beginning 7pm ET/4pm PT on NBC.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Brain: Mad Men
Heart: Breaking Bad
Gut: Mad Men
Two series, two incredible seasons of television. Mad Men will easily walk away with the Emmy, but I would love to see Breaking Bad take home the Emmy. The Good Wife has a wave of Emmy love surrounding it and shouldn’t be counted out while Dexter and Lost both have shots as well. True Blood has no shot whatsoever as what appears to be a gimme nomination for HBO.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA SERIES
Brain: Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Heart: Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Gut: Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
The most packed category of the entire ceremony, any of the six nominees could deservedly win. I’ll be rooting for Kyle Chandler to get his due, but I think it’ll be between Bryan Cranston and Michael C. Hall for their flashier, meatier performances.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA SERIES
Brain: Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Heart: Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Gut: Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Julianna Margulies is riding on a wave of hype and momentum, the category is her’s to lose. But I am definitely going to root for Connie Britton to finally get the recognition she deserves.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA SERIES
Brain: Terry O’Quinn (Lost)
Heart: Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Gut: Terry O’Quinn (Lost) or Michael Emerson (Lost)
Aaron Paul will probably passed over again in favor of repeat wins for either Lost Emmy winner.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA SERIES
Brain: Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Heart: Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Gut: Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Christine Baranski could easily ride a Good Wife wave that has swept the Emmys, but Christina Hendricks has the upper hand in the category.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
Brain: Modern Family
Heart: Modern Family
Gut: Modern Family
Glee might have an outside shot, but I think Modern Family will rightfully come out on top as the season’s best comedy. But don’t count out 30 Rock.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES
Brain: Tony Shalhoub (Monk)
Heart: Tony Shalhoub (Monk) or Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory)
Gut: Tony Shalhoub (Monk)
Tony Shalhoub may have won too many Emmys, but if he wins this time, it’ll be well deserved for an emotional farewell. If the Emmys will honor the non-comedies of Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara then they’ll have no problem giving an Emmy to a favorite of theirs with a sentimental tape.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES
Brain: Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Heart: Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation)
Gut: Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
The Emmys could easily hand Tina Fey another one, but the buzz is for Edie Falco. I would love to see Amy Poehler upset with her show’s incredible resurgence this season.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES
Brain: Ty Burrell (Modern Family)
Heart: Ty Burrell (Modern Family)
Gut: Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
If the Emmys for some reason decide to be boring, then I won’t be surprised to see Neil Patrick Harris go home with the Emmy. But I fully expect this to be one of the many Modern Family wins of the night.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES
Brain: Jane Lynch (Glee)
Heart: Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Gut: Jane Lynch (Glee)
Jane Lynch is a lock, but would love to see Julie Bowen with the upset.

OUTSTANDING REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM
Brain: The Amazing Race
Heart: The Amazing Race
Gut: The Amazing Race
This is a lock. Otherwise, something is wrong with the world.

  1. Good point… head/heart/gut! And yes, there’s a reason that the ‘head tells you one thing, the heart another and then there’s the gut feeling or gut instinct’… It’s because, as recent neuroscience research has shown, there are brains in our heart and gut and these are involved in some crucial functions and competencies. And it’s only when all three brains are aligned, and the autonomic nervous system is in balance, that we make the wisest and most intelligent decisions. We’ve just released a book called ‘mBraining’ (for multiple braining – head, heart and gut) that describes the behavioral modeling research we’ve completed, informed by the recent neuroscience findings, about the core competencies of the three brains, how to communicate with them and how to align them and tap into the innate intelligence of the heart and gut brains. Please check out http://www.mbraining.com if you are at all interested in the coaching models we have uncovered in our work.
