Fall TV P/Review: The Amazing Race, Battlestar Galactica, The Office, Supernaural

TOP 5 “MUST-SEE” RETURNING SHOWS FOR 2006-2007
1. THE AMAZING RACE (CBS)
Premieres Sunday, September 17th at 8:30PM/7:30c
After highly criticized 8th and 9th seasons for the now four-time Emmy Award winning series, all eyes will be on this show’s milestone 10th season. The Amazing Race moves to a new night, where CBS hopes the show will finally gain some exposure. The new season includes a promised twist to the race course and a very diverse cast (which, unlike Survivor, was not touted by the producers).Needless to say, Race fans have a lot of high expectations for the 10th season. But not once in its last nine has The Amazing Race failed to deliver the drama, comedy, adventure, and thrill it has promised since its very first episode in 2001.

2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (SCIFI)
Premieres Friday, October 6th at 9:00PM/8:00c
While the Emmys continue to look the other way, critics and fans alike continue to shower their praise onto Battlestar Galactica. In its two seasons (and even including the miniseries that started it all), Battlestar Galactica has managed to produce an amazing hour of dramatic television that can’t even be seen on network TV. Breaking through “sci-fi stereotypes,” the series goes beyond the Star Treks and even Stargates to present an almost parallel and eerily realistic political storyline about a people running from (and at the end of last season, surrendering to) the cylons who had attempted a complete genocide of the human race. The shocking season finale cliffhanger has led to much speculation about season 3, and there is no question, that the best hour of drama on television is about to take it to the next level.

3. THE OFFICE (NBC)
Premieres Thursday, September 21st at 8:30PM/7:30c
It premiered with everyone saying that it would never come close to the original, that another Americanized British comedy from NBC would fall flat like all the others. However after two seasons, The Office is now an Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series. Leaving fans with a huge, unexpected cliffhanger, season 3 promises to bring more surprises and more office hilarity than ever before brought to you by an amazing cast led by the unstoppable Steve Carell.

4. SUPERNATURAL (CW)
Premieres Thursday, September 28th at 9:00PM/8:00c
The surprise, sleeper hit of last season; Supernatural broke through the usual teen angst dramas of the WB and allowed itself to appeal to almost all audiences. With genuinely “jump out of your seat” stories and more than capable leads in Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, Supernatural could be the CW’s long term team player.

5. VERONICA MARS (CW)
Premieres Tuesday, October 3rd at 9:00PM/8:00c
This critical darling may need to pull something big out to save itself. Though never a ratings hit, Veronica Mars has consistently been one of network television’s best dramas. Kristen Bell delivers numerous Emmy worthy performances, as well as her on-screen father, Enrico Colantoni. As the show adopts a new format and with Veronica starting a new life in college, the series will get a refreshing and welcome change. The CW is pushing its pairing with Gilmore Girls, but everyone will have to wait and see what will be the ultimate fate of this television gem.

ALSO CHECK OUT The sweet and funny How I Met Your Mother (CBS, Monday 9/18, 8:30PM/7:30c); the witty and dramatic House (Fox, Tuesdays 8:00PM/7:00c); and the hopefully resurging Lost (ABC, Wednesday 9/27, 9:00PM/8:00c).
