2005 Fall Upfronts: ABC and The WB

2005 FALL UPFRONT PRESENTATIONS: ABC
Hmm… ABC is strange… they made moves that NBC should’ve made… and considering ABC is on a roll, they did some pretty wierd things with their schedule

THE GOOD:
Commander in Chief is one of those buzz worthy shows… should probably be a hit for ABC

THE BAD:
– -ABC has this unusual two comedy a night format in which they try to create a family hour at 8pm with comedies before having dramas at 9pm and 10pm…
-Unecessary shifting of LOST and ALIAS… Alias’ move will probably be the death of it… and Lost’s move is just inexplicable since it dominates 8pm… (more below)
-They renewed their mediocre comedies and picked up more mediocre comedies

SURPRISES
– -The move of Alias to Thursdays is not good… Not only does it lead ABC’s weakest weekday, even after Lost, Alias doesn’t get a huge audience… and adding to this Jen’s pregnancy, I think Alias’ days are numbered…
-ABC did so much shuffling and picked up so many series that it is just so weird that a network doing so well would do that…

CONCLUSION: ABC could’ve kept their momentum into next season, but this complete overhaul is baffling. Who knows how they’ll do…

2005 FALL UPFRONT PRESENTATIONS: THE WB
The first of the bottom 2 networks…

THE GOOD:
Twins… Passions’ Molly Stanton gets a primetime gig! Yay!! Congrats, this comedy sounds interesting…
Supernatural should be an awesome show… already getting a lot of buzz…. but…

THE BAD:
– -… The WB scheduled it on Tuesdays at 9pm against TAR, Veronica Mars, The Office, and ABC’s new Commander in Chief… It would’ve been a better fit with Smallville… not Gilmore Girls…

SURPRISES
-Speaking of Smallville, its move to Thursdays (with Everwood) is a big surprise as well… OC/Smallvile share the same audience so that should be a problem for WB and Fox… Everwood, away from 7th Heaven, might be a problem

CONCLUSION: The WB picked up a few good shows… but nothing can ever really take The WB from out of the 5th place spot… However, The WB can create cult hits, and Supernatural could be just that… and with the collapse of ABC’s TGIF, The WB’s Friday should make a resurgence…

TOMORROW: CBS
