For Your (International!) Emmy Consideration – Eugene

Villains are always the hardest, yet juiciest characters to play on a television drama. It is impressive when an actor can pull it off and even more so when an actor known for hero or “good” characters can pull it off.

On Korea’s record breaking Baker King, Kim Tak Goo (international title: Bread, Love and Dreams), two actresses did just that. The second of those actresses is Kim Yoo Jin, better known as singer-actress Eugene. Continue reading

For Your (International!) Emmy Consideration – Jeon In Hwa

For Your (International!) Emmy Consideration – Angel Aquino

Genuinely great Filipino soap operas are hard to come by, even more so genuinely great performances.

But as Magkaribal surprised everyone with its excellent production, so did Angel Aquino as broken, hurt, and vengeful villain Vera Cruz.

Villains are always some of the Continue reading

For Your (International!) Emmy Consideration – Magkaribal

Rarely does a Filipino soap opera inspire any kind of strong, legitimate praise worthy of recognition. Hell, rarely does a Filipino soap opera inspire period!

But ABS-CBN’s 2010 series Magkaribal proved that maybe there is some quality life on Philippine television. Continue reading

For Your Emmy Consideration – The Amazing Race

The seven year streak came to an abrupt halt last year when Top Chef shocked the world to take the Emmy for Reality-Competition Program from formerly unbeatable champ The Amazing Race.

The Amazing Race remains one of the television’s most exciting and most stunning adventures, but recent seasons have admittedly lost the spark that truly made the series incredible, especially in Continue reading

For Your Emmy Consideration – Phil Keoghan

Like The Amazing Race dominated the Reality-Competition category, so too did Survivor host Jeff Probst dominate the Reality Show Host category. Probst has been a deserving winner, but there’s another guy out there too who’s put in 10 equally excellent years in front of the camera.

Phil Keoghan continues to be Continue reading

For Your Emmy Consideration – Friday Night Lights

Five years, five seasons. Friday Night Lights defied the odds and remained TV’s biggest underdog. It might not have been grabbed the ratings, but it certainly captured the hearts and minds of the millions of fans who were lucky enough to have watched.

A drama series about the residents of a small football-loving town in Texas doesn’t immediately scream Continue reading

For Your Emmy (and Renewal!) Consideration – Outsourced

NBC’s Outsourced has had a bumpy roller coaster of a life. From premature assumptions before it even premiered to becoming NBC’s highest rated new scripted series to getting stuck on the bubble awaiting its fate.

The comedy about an Indian call center for an American novelties company could be the biggest underdog story of the season outside of Dillon, Texas. Despite getting shuffled to a difficult timeslot (after doing very well in its original) and continuing to get unwarranted and baseless criticism from critics and some viewers alike, Outsourced forged ahead to grow into one of television’s Continue reading
