Leg 16.03 – “What if I Get Stepped On?!”

The Amazing Race

The Race continues as teams wake up before sunrise and must choose a brand new 2019 Kia Sorento and drive themselves to the historic city of San Antonio de Areco.

The Amazing Race

The Amazing Race

Teams must find Estancia la Portena where they will open their next clue revealing the Road Block: Who feels like smoking?

The Amazing Race

The gauchos of the Pampas region have perfected the art of grilling meat. For this Road Block, teams must properly hang two racks of lamb and one rack of beef ribs onto a set of metal grills to cook asado-style. Once they have been correctly set-up, both team members will enjoy a quick bite of the meat for breakfast before receiving the next clue.

The Amazing Race

Teams must now drive themselves to Estancia la Cinacina.

The Amazing Race

And here, teams will find the first U-Turn of the Race! (If activated.) This will be an Anonymous Double U-Turn!

Once teams check-in at the U-Turn board, they will encounter the Detour: Rope It In or Push It Out. For both Detours, teams will dress in traditional gaucho gear.

The Amazing Race

In Rope It In, teams must learn how to properly tie a lasso and then use it to rope in ten different targets (five for each team member). Once they’ve pulled all targets past the line, teams will get the next clue.

The Amazing Race

In Push It Out, teams must prepare a carriage exactly like a nearby example. They must then push the carriage to a team of waiting horses to receive the next clue.

The Amazing Race

That clue points teams to Museo Draghi.

The Amazing Race

Argentina and specifically the lowlands of this region are rich in silver. And the silverworks, steeped deep in the gaucho tradition, continue to be shared by talented artisans today. For this task, teams must choose a silver figurine here in the museum and then search the town center for a silversmith fashioning the same figure. Teams must then learn how to finish the piece to receive the next clue.

The Amazing Race

This is also the Trigger Point for this Leg. If any team chooses this cup figurine, the U-Turn or Yield will be activated on the next Leg.

The Amazing Race

Teams must now make their way to Estancia La Bamba de Areco.

The Amazing Race

Each team member must enter a corral and attempt to remove a bandana from the neck of one of the calves. Each bandana has their next clue: “Make your way on foot to the Mat somewhere on the estancia.”

The Amazing Race

Teams will make their way on foot to the Pit Stop, hidden in this alcove on the ranch. The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

I think this is a very nice 3rd Leg. Much of it is recycled from the two San Antonio de Areco Legs of the past (TAR5 and TAR27) with a few recycled from other Argentina Legs. But overall, it’s a nice and full Leg .

First, we have another self-driving Leg. Which is always great for some extra drama of teams having to navigate themselves. But also to make our great sponsor Kia happy of course.

Lots of estancias on this Leg. But visiting ranches and having tasks there fits with the overall theme of this Leg.

The Road Block is from TAR27 and it’s a nice task for early morning. I’d rather not recycle the meat eating from TAR7. This TAR27 Road Block is much more interesting and challenging. Physical at some points, mental and attention to detail at others. Good task.

So I’ve used “Blind” U-Turns and Yields on TARPHDME, taking on the TARUS terms. But I realized TARPH (the real one!) used “Anonymous” instead and it makes sense too. So I’ll be using “Anonymous” from now on. =D

But this is a great spot for the U-Turn. And also putting it before the Detour has become an okay decision now. It presents some interesting possibilities and also throws teams off depending on where it will appear (before or after the Detour).

The Detour options are pretty standard. The carriage is slightly modified TAR27 Detour. The lasso Detour is I think recycled from TAR13 or TAR16. I don’t exactly remember, but I do remember a lasso Detour.

My Google scouting trip shows that the region here is known for its silverworks as well. So why not add that fresh task to help fill out this Leg. It’s a simple task, but a nice task to add in right before heading to the Pit Stop.

And that brings us to what should hopefully be an exciting end to the Leg. Our hope here is that most teams arrive at the estancia around the same time. So teams will do this classic TAR5 task together and add to the tension and sense of urgency needed when teams find out this is the Pit Stop.

And since both team members must grab a flag, it should hopefully get them anxious as they will already know the Pit Stop is nearby before the second team member goes into the corral. Of course, if other teams are able to move ahead by being fast with the flags then it will be a great, dramatic end to the Leg.

So overall, a good Leg and lots of exciting possibilities for competition.
