Leg 9 – “Is she going to flip me off?!”

TARPHDM13

Teams are in for a crazy Leg as they first learn they will be flying to La Paz, Bolivia!

Teams will need to find their own flights and will end up on one of the following two: EasyJet and Avianca via Madrid and Bogota arriving at 2:50am or TAP-Portugal and American Airlines via Miami arriving at 5am.

TARPHDM13

Once in La Paz, teams must find Plaza Murillo.

TARPHDM13

Here, teams will check in at the Forced Double U-Turn Vote Board, powered by Samsung and Smart, if activated. They will also obtain their next clue.

TARPHDM13

That clue points teams to the Narvaez Hat Shop… which HOURS OF OPERATION, opens at 8am. When it opens, teams must purchase a bowler hat to receive next clue.

TARPHDM13

Teams must now make their way by taxi to Los Titanes del Ring in El Alto where they will find the Road Block: Who won’t back down from a fight?

TARPHDM13

For this Road Block, teams must learn six wrestling moves from the Fighting Cholitas. When they properly perform the moves, they will be given the next clue.

TARPHDM13

Teams must now make their way to Plaza San Francisco where they will find the Detour: Turtles or Textiles. They will also find the Forced Double U-Turn Reveal Board.

TARPHDM13

In Turtle, teams must search the area for a classic Volkswagen Beetle, known in Bolivia as a “peta” or turtle. They must deliver the car through cobblestone streets to a nearby autoshop, but they will find that it has no engine. Once they figure out how to bring the car to the shop, they will get their next clue.

TARPHDM13

In Textiles, teams will head to the Witches Market and dress a mannequin according to a photo and then carry it through the different shops to find its matching twin. Once they’ve reunited the twins, they will be given the next clue.

TARPHDM13

After the Detour, teams must make their way to Estacion Central of the Mi Teleferico cable car system and take it to the 16 de Julio station. Their next clue will be waiting outside the station.

TARPHDM13

Teams must search the area for a set of mobile playground equipment which they must transport to a local park to set up for children for the day. Once correctly assembled, teams will be given the next clue.

TARPHDM13

Teams must now hop onto an overnight bus to the town of Uyuni where they will choose a four-wheel drive Kia Sportage and a driver who will take them to the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flats in the world. They must direct their driver until they find a flagged area and cluebox.

TARPHDM13

Teams must dig through piles of salt for a satchel containing their next clue, five photographs and a brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

TARPHDM13

A popular activity here at Salar de Uyuni is taking fun perspective photos. Teams must recreate five such photos, according to the examples in their satchel and using the Galaxy S7 Edge. When their photos are approved, they will receive their next clue and a key.

TARPHDM13

Teams must hop back into their Kia Sportage and be driven to these flags. Using the key provided in the last task, teams must find their own trunk which has a set of flags. They must then raise the flags of countries they have visited so far on the Race, in order, to receive their next clue. The trunk will contain several flags that will not be used.

TARPHDM13

This is also the Final! Trigger Point of the Race. If at least two teams fail on their first attempts, the final U-Turn or Yield will be activated.

Finally, this long Leg comes to an end as teams can direct their driver to the Pit Stop, Isla Incahuasi.

TARPHDM13

The first team to check in here will win P200,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check in here… WILL NOT be eliminated! This is the final Non-Elimination Leg of the Race and that team must choose a penalty envelope…

…which will be enforced on the next Leg…

WHICH BEGINS RIGHT NOW!!!

“Director’s” Commentary

Alright! So this is kind of a messy Leg (but actually, wait until the next one! lol). Traditionally and more simply, the Leg can end after the El Alto mobile playground task. But the biggest reason I have Bolivia on this Route is so teams can visit Salar de Uyuni. A visit there could easily be a Leg by itself. But my Google scouting trip didn’t really yield enough stuff to do for that to be possible.

So for now, Uyuni gets tacked on to the end of the Leg. A very, VERY full Leg. Even more than the usual full TARPHDME Leg.

Anyway, we start with some TAR13 throwback goodness. The hat shop and the Cholitas are all TAR13 and episodes I haven’t even watched in years, to be honest. But it’s a quirky task and interestingly different for TARPHDME audience. lol

The Detour is as typical as you can get. It recycles the India VW Bug task as well as a mannequin task which has been recycled numerous times, including TARPH (the real one). But on a Leg that would be focused on Uyuni, this Detour is a fine filler.

Can’t visit La Paz without featuring the cable car system (with the use of 4K UHD drones of course). An interesting, high risk task could also involve teams climbing up the huge support beams of the cable car system or even riding on top of the capsules like TARAu’s Road Block.

And the mobile playground was something I stumbled upon from my Googling. =)

Logistics needs to get teams on that overnight bus to Uyuni. It’s the simplest way. It should also get teams some local interaction as well.

In Salar de Uyuni, the perspective photos and the flag raising are very simple and touristy tasks. But I’m sure an actual visit to the salt flats would yield some awesome possible tasks there.

Overall, a very very full Leg. Messy design, but hey this is a #FakeNews #FakeRace, so anything goes! Lol
