Leg 10: “I don’t think I should be driving after doing that.”

Beginning the 10th Leg of the Race, teams must make their way to this vertical carpark in Gangnam where they will be picking up a brand new 2016 Kia Sorento.

They will be driving that Kia Sorento 244 kilometers to the city of Andong in North Gyeongsang Province.

Teams will make their way to the Andong Soju Museum where they will meet 90 year old Cho Ok Hwa who was declared an “intangible cultural asset” for her work as a maser artisan of traditional Andong soju.

Teams will get a lesson from Cho Ok Hwa herself and learn the process of making traditional soju. (Something they will need to remember later on this Leg.)

After she offers them a shot of soju, she will hand them the next clue.

Teams must now make their way to the Hahoe Folk Village where they will find the Detour: Rub It or Light It.

In Rub It, teams will join locals in correctly preparing one container of kimchi. Once the grandmothers approve of their kimchi, they will receive their next clue.

In Light It, teams must gather firewood on their backs and then correctly stack them according to an example. They must then successfully light a traditional Korean stove to receive their next clue.

The next clue will immediately reveal the Road Block: Who has good taste?

For this Road Block, teams will use what they’ve learned from Cho Ok Hwa to determine the time of fermentation of two different samples of soju. Each team will choose two different bottles of soju and must take a sip from dozens of burnay jars to find the two containing the soju matching the samples. Writing down the time of fermentation on a form based on the cards attached to the jars, teams will hand it to a distiller. If correct, teams will get the next clue.

That final clue of the Leg points teams to the Pit Stop at Bongjeongsa Temple.

The first team to check-in here will win P100,000 from Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check-in here WILL be eliminated.

“Director’s” Commentary

Not many rural Legs on this Race so far, so this is definitely a welcome Leg. Especially after the Seoul Leg.

Before driving into the countryside though, I just recently stumbled upon there being a vertical carpark in Gangnam! I only remember seeing that in Japan and considered using it on a future Japanese Leg, but I didn’t. Good thing too so I could include it on this Leg.

I first learned about Cho Ok Hwa watching “iWitness” on GMA where reporter Howie Severino featured her and Andong soju on his visit to Korea. She’s awesome! So it would definitely be great to see TAR visit her. And I’m writing this after seeing Leg 10 of TAR26 where they also visited a nice grandmother expert of the drink as well.

A rural Korean Leg definitely needs to center on traditional stuff like soju or kimchi or simple, traditional homes. Farming tasks are also a good possibility for rural Korean Legs, especially for this Race where most of my Legs were in urban centers. But for now, I think this is a solid and equal Detour.

The Road Block is interesting though. It’s a little rough in set-up, but there’s definitely a good task there regarding fermentation and searching through different jars of ready and not-so-ready soju.

So overall, this should be a good Leg and a nice complement to the Seoul Leg as well.
