Leg 4: “You want me to sleep on the street?”

The Race continues as teams set off on the 4th Leg from Vancouver via Houston on the way to their next destination, Quito, Ecuador.

Teams will all be on the same flight (of course) arriving at 10:59pm. Once they’ve arrived in Quito, teams must make their way to Basilica del Voto Nacional.

Here, teams will sign-up for one of two departure times tomorrow morning: 3 teams at 7am, 2 teams at 7:15am and 4 teams at 7:30am.

The priest will hand them the clue in the morning and that clue reveals the Detour: Religious Restoration or Sorbet Spin.

For both Detours, teams must walk to each location from the Cathedral.

In Religious Restoration, teams must help restore a broken and worn down religious figurine. Once they’ve restored it to the satisfaction of shop owner Gonzalo Gallordo, they’ll receive their next clue.

In Sorbet Spin, teams must spin guanabana juice into fresh sorbet at Halederia San Agustin, the oldest ice cream parlor in Quito. Once they’ve made enough sorbet for themselves and a table of four customers, they will receive their next clue.

But OH! There’s a U-Turn ahead!

Teams will find the Double U-Turn board at Plaza de la Independencia, known locally as Plaza Grande.

After the U-Turn, teams will head to the Mercado de Santa Clara by taxi where they will undergo a local cleansing ritual known as limpia. After the possibly uncomfortable cleansing, teams will receive their next clue.

That clue reveals a Double Road Block!

Teams must join a local dance troupe performing in the Plaza de San Francisco. One team member will play an instrument while another will dance. If their musicality and rhythm gets the thumbs up from the crowd, they will receive their next clue.

And that final clue points teams to the Pit Stop by the Virgin statue on top of the 200-meter volcanic hill, El Panecillo.

The first team to check-in here will win P100,000 courtesy of Shell V-Power Nitro+.

The last team to check-in here WILL be eliminated!

“Director’s” Commentary

First visit to South America! I like this Leg. My favorite part is definitely the limpia cleansing ritual. It can be the South American version of the Chinese foot massage. Should make for some fun scenes.

The Detour is inspired by this article about traveling to Quito. And I think both sides of the Detour are pretty good tasks. Plus, they’re not too bad to do for a U-Turn as well.

You’ve gotta have dancing tasks on every Race, so this would be a good place for one. And it’s another Double Road Block since, again, I have no idea what else teams can do in the city. lol But trust me, the Road Block count will work out in the end.

So, a solid Leg in Quito and nice to have teams do tasks within walking distance to each other.
