Recap: The Amazing Race Australia, Episode 2.03 – “I don’t really like to use my brain.”

The Amazing Race Australia 2, Episode 3

The Leg

During the Pit Stop, teams were taken by bus from Delhi to Jaipur where they’d start the third leg of the Race.  Teams must make their way to Red Elephant Temple.

Michelle & Jo arrive at the Temple first and receive the Road Block clue.

In this Road Block, teams make their way to Bharat Driving and Maintenance School where they will learn about Indian road signs and regulations (or lack thereof) before going on a practical driving test on the streets of Jaipur to a marketplace.  If they pass the test, they’ll receive their next clue.

Michelle and Sticky pass their tests (though a tuk-tuk crashed in Sticky on the way) and they receive their next clue.  Teams must load 75 clay pots onto an ox-driven cart and deliver them to marked stalls at the other end of the market to exchange for their next clue.  However, if they break more than 15 pots, they will receive a 15 minute penalty to be served at the drop off point.

As Michelle & Jo and Sticky & Sam try to hold on to their lead, the others navigate Jaipur’s chaotic streets.  Kym and Paul have a little staredown at a stoplight and Shane almost runs over a dog while Sarah has fun tooting her horn the entire way.

Michelle & Jo and Sticky & Sam get going with their carts but quickly their pots come crashing down.  Arriving at the marked stalls, they are told they’ve broken too many pots, and they wait out their penalty.

Sue & Teresa haven’t even finished loading their cart when some of their pots fall off.  Ross & Tarryn drop a couple on the way as well.  Kym & Donna start, but their cart comes a little too close to Paul who’s waiting for Steve to finish learning how to drive the ox, causing a bunch of Kym & Donna’s pots to fall off.

Back at the drop off point, Michelle & Jo and Sticky & Sam are handed their next clues and reveal a 2nd Road Block.

In this Road Block, teams head to Panna Meena ka Kund, an ancient stepwell near Amber Fort.  They must figure out how to get to a waiting guru by using a combination of 41 steps down and 10 steps up.  Only when they’ve reached the guru using the correct combination of steps will they receive their next clue.

Sticky & Sam arrive at the well first and Sticky gets the right combination on his 2nd attempt.  They get the clue telling them to head to the Pit Stop at Nahargarh Fort and the buds officially check-in first for the second leg in a row and win an entertainment showcase worth $5000.

Michelle and Tarryn start the Road Block at the same time, but it is Tarryn that finishes first.  She and Ross head to Pit Stop to finish 2nd.

As Shane & Andrew and Joseph & Grace finish the pots, Sarah gets her ass grabbed by a kid while other kids knock pots off of Lucy & Emilia’s cart.

Michelle & Jo finish the Road Block and head to the Pit Stop to finish 3rd.  Back at the Road Block, Sue is struggling as Donna and Paul arrive.  Paul, acknowledging he has to back up his talk, gets it in his first attempt.  But Donna is right behind him and they Race to the Pit Stop.  Kym & Donna’s tuk-tuk driver passes “the buffheads” allowing them to check-in 4th with Paul & Steve officially 5th.

Sue continues struggling as Shane & Andrew, Joseph & Grace, and James & Sarah are in and out of there and head to the Pit Stop to check-in 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.  That leaves Lucy & Emilia, again in last, hoping to catch up.

And they do.  Emilia manages to finish the Road Block before Sue and they head to the Pit Stop.  Sue finally gets it as well and it’s a maybe Race to the Mat.

But it’s Lucy & Emilia who check-in 9th, saved again while Sue & Teresa are eliminated.

Episode Thoughts
What’s this I see?  American leg design!?!  This was the most linear leg TARAu has had this season and considering there was apparently an unaired Detour this leg, you know it’s bad leg design when team positions are pretty much unchanged if it wasn’t for  Sue’s stumbling at the Road Block.

I think it would’ve been better (and more deliciously chaotic) if they had the Pit Start in Delhi and used the charter bus as an equalizer instead of transporting the teams to Jaipur during the Pit Stop.

The tasks made up for the leg design at least.  The pots tasks was a lot more fun than the TAR20 watermelon Detour.  The driving Road Block was great for getting the teams into the chaos if Indian streets and the 2nd Road Block was visually awesome and mentally challenging for the teams, which is a great combination.

Another solid episode for TARAu.

Paul & Steve Paul & Steve – They’re actually loosening up a little and picking themselves more.  Good on Paul for finally backing up his words and I have to side with him on the backpack brushing-gate at the task.  They may do anything to win, but they haven’t cheated as Kym & Donna would like to think.
Lucy & Emilia Lucy & Emilia – Another hilarious leg from them and they again get saved from elimination.  I don’t know if I want them to keep it up like this or actually step up and Race.  It’s nice to see they are having fun though.
Sue & Teresa Sue & Teresa – A sad way for them to go.  They had run two great legs and they were doing very well this leg until Sue’s collapse at the Road Block.  It’s a shame because their aura spray could’ve gone much further in the Race.  They stayed positive throughout though and they were otherwise a good team.
Sarah & James Sarah & James – Sarah’s hilarious.  She has no problem pointing out her assets and botox-infused face and doesn’t seem to mind being laughed at.  Strangely enough though, she and James have been running a good Race in terms of getting tasks done without problems, but for some reason, they can’t get themselves out of the middle of the pack.  Maybe it’s their taxi troubles or their little spats, but they’ve gone something in them that could mean they go far.
Sticky & Sam Sticky & Sam – A great and pretty easy leg for them.  They are definitely setting themselves up nicely for a strong run.  They’re enjoying themselves and avoid mistakes.  Let’s see if they can keep it up.
Tarryn & Ross Tarryn & Ross – An alright leg for them this leg.  Quiet, but solid performance from them.  Hope to see more from their personalities though and maybe a little more on their father-daughter dynamic that we saw in the last two legs.
Michelle & Jo Michelle & Jo – They’re continuing to be a very strong team.  They have what it takes to go far, but they also need to avoid letting frustration get the better of them.  They’ve run a good Race so far and still have the potential for a lot more.
Shane & Andrew Shane & Andrew – Another so-so leg from the cops.  They’re flying under the radar, no question.  They do well in tasks, like James & Sarah, but are never able to get themselves up in the rankings.  We’ll see how they do in the next legs.
Donna & Kym Donna & Kym – The “buffheads” may be cocky and loud, but if anything, their pots breaking on Paul’s backpack was their fault.  I don’t think they’re as mean-spirited as they like to think Paul & Steve are, but they might want to concentrate on the Race more rather than on what Paul & Steve “may” be doing to screw them over.
Joseph & Grace Joseph & Grace – An okay leg from them.  Sarah showed a little more of her feisty side this leg and it should be interesting to see if that’ll come out more in the future.  Nothing spectacular from them yet though.

Quotes from Episode 2.03

Sticky: “I’d say there’s going to be elephants there.’
Sam: “Red ones?!”

Sarah: “Plan of attack: Use your boozies to stall the other driver.”

Michelle: “I was a grandma Indian driver.”

Grace: “I don’t really like to use my brain.”

Sarah: “I’m tellin’ ya, thank God for Botox, that’s all I can say, because my whole face would be going like, this right now.  So, it makes me look quite thrilled and happy and…”
James: “Surprised.”
