Midseason 2006 TV Picks!

MIDSEASON IS HERE!
The television midseason is here. These are a couple of shows definitely worth checking out in the next few months:

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, SEASON 2.5 SCIFI
New episode debuts Fridays at 10PM; Encores early Saturday at 1AM and following Monday at 11PM
Television’s best drama returned on Friday, January 6th after the critically acclaimed series left fans on the edge of their seats last October. The second part of the show’s 2nd season began with a two-part action-packed premiere, while the pivotal 3rd episode of the season (airing last Friday) showed that Battlestar Galactica is more than just a sci-fi series. Combining the mystery and intrigue of Lost, the political turmoil of The West Wing, the twists and turns of a Daytime soap opera, and space battle scenes that could rival any Star Wars film, Battlestar Galactica has something that everyone, even non-science fiction fans, can enjoy.

THE OFFICE NBC
Thursdays at 9:30PM
Television’s funniest comedy continues to bring the everyday workplace to hilarious life. The cast, led by Golden Globe winner Steve Carell, nails every subtle and not so subtle joke while bringing the humor reminiscent of the original BBC series. The American version of The Office has managed to break through skepticism to develop an identity separate of the BBC original, which allows the series to become NBC’s most original comedy in years. The network, which is in need of quality hits, has put its faith in the show, and rightly so.

SCRUBS NBC
Tuesdays at 9:00PM and 9:30PM
The Emmy-nominated comedy finally returns to NBC’s schedule, and is showing no signs of slowing down. This critically acclaimed, though ratings challenged, comedy continues its over-the-top, yet hilarious ways following the lives of the doctors of Sacred Heart hospital. This under-appreciated series is one of network television’s best, and funniest shows.

SUPERNATURAL WB
New episode debuts Tuesdays at 9:00PM; Encores Sunday at 9:00PM
The WB pulled a shocker this season as they introduced their first widely acclaimed series since Gilmore Girls in Supernatural. Taking the “procedural drama” to a different level, the series uses the backdrop of Sam and Dean’s search for their father and the “thing” that killed their mother to bring to life the most infamous urban legends and myths. Unlike The X-Files which the show is often compared to, the evil that the brothers encounter could very well exist anywhere, and have been rooted in many local and cultural traditions that make The White Lady, demons, or Bloody Mary far scarier than a conspiracy about aliens. Supernatural is this season’s biggest surprise.

VERONICA MARS UPN
Wednesdays at 9:00PM
The mystery continues as Veronica Mars gets closer to solving her latest mystery. The witty dialogue fits in well with the much heavier material that the show often portrays. Veronica Mars is UPN’s biggest surprise as it has become one of television’s best dramas.

PANDAY, WORLD TWO TFC/ABS-CBN
Returning February 2006
Who says Philippine television has to use to special effects worse than the first seasons of Power Rangers. ABS-CBN’s Panday managed to raise the bar on Philippine “fantaseryes” in terms of production as well as storytelling. The series, though subpar to any American series in terms of production, is above average for Philippine standards. A solid story helped the series recover from the weak start last Fall. As “World Two” is ready to begin, Panday promises to be much more action-packed this time around with a better sense of what the series, as a whole, has set out to present to the audience. Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista have developed as a capable pairing/”love-team” and their talents will definitely be put to the test with World Two’s heavier and more dramatic story arcs.

THE AMAZING RACE 9 CBS
Season Premiere Tuesday, February 28 at 9:00PM
Despite the divided opinion of the recent Family Edition of the 3-time Emmy winning series, The Amazing Race hasn’t lost any steam as it returns this February to its regular format with teams of two racing around the world for $1 Million. A truly around the world Race will be the route this time around, with an eccentric and diverse group of teams creating all the drama, comedy, and adventure that has come to be synonymous with The Amazing Race. It should be another amazing season… and besides, anything can be better than the disaster that was The Amazing Race 7.

None of these sound all that interesting? Root for Fil-Am singer Jose “Sway” Penala (currently of 6th Day and formerly of DnH) on Fox’s American Idol (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) … see the castaways get farther and farther from being rescued on ABC’s award winning Lost (Wednesday 9PM) … or watch Sydney Bristow give birth and end her spy career on the final episodes of ABC’s Alias (returning in March) …
